That's about all of it. Following seas. South at 10 - 15 while we were cruising 300 degrees (WNW).

Too many groundings in Apalachicola, so we saved $600 and one day. We cruised at 1000 RPM, 9 mph, 4 gph for 10 hours, off and on. We only planed for 6 hours, though we planned to plane 6 1/2 - 7 hours. I saved an hour of planing's fuel in case we needed to hurry to a port, but then found dense fog on arrival at our pass, so we continued to fish all the way to the dock.

We left Hudson, Fl at 0515 EDST. We made our way out of the shallows and slow-cruised for 2 hours, then fast cruised for 2 1/4 hours, then slow cruised for a couple more while fishing. We caught 4, very large Bonita (trash tuna) and threw them all back. We continued to rotate between the two speeds to save fuel and save my wife from too much rocking and rolling - planing is more comfortable for her.

We carry 350 gallons total, and use about 40 gph while planing and heavy (dinghy on back). We saved $600 by bypassing Apalachicola. Had we gone there, we would have used 300 gallons getting there, then another 100 getting home, plus dinner out, plus a night at the marina. As it was, we only used the first 300 gallons and made it all the way home. I really enjoyed slow-cruising across the Gulf. Several packs of Dolphins attacked our boat at various points along the way (video to follow).

We always ran both engines the entire time. There was some rain along the way, some white caps, not one other boat at all period dot. Mind is mush. More later.

Sounds like a fun trip. Looking for more details and pix, John.

John

Sounds like a long day. We prefer the slow cruise as well but it does rock and roll with a quartering sea. What speed/depth do you fish at? How far south do you go this time? Look forward to your update.

We are still in the 30's with lows in the teens in Ohio. Looks like a late spring up here!

Mushy brain starts at about 5 hours.........babbling to yourself at 8 hours and you know you are in trouble when you start singing 50's & 60's rock songs at the top of your lungs.

I fished at 8 - 10 mph because that was the best speed for the boat. One lurer on top and one down deep (heavy tuna type).

We went back to St Pete for a couple of months. The Vinoy is an awesome spot due to access to the workout facilities, pool, sauna's, and down town St Pete. We have many, many friends in the area now. It wasn't as warm as we would have liked. Last year, we were there a month later in the year. Not sure what we're going to do next year.

After we turned the corner South of Cape San Blas, it was a directly following sea. It was almost as if it were calm. Then, once in the bay, the wind was in our faces for the first time all day, but the water was smooth. We went back up on plane for a few minutes to blow everything out, if there is such a thing. On plane, the fuel tanks were indicating almost zero fuel, so I didn't leave it on plane very long, just in case. Once back down in the water, we were indicating 20 gallons per side. My experience is that that means 30 gallons per side. At four gallons per hour, that's a lot of range left over, though you wouldn't want to run them out.

John, It was nice seeing you and Shelly again. Glad you had an UN-eventful trip home. Look forward to seing you guys again next year!

Perry! Banner last night with the gang. We had a blast. Can't wait 'til next year as well.

Good stuff. I always enjoy the pics you post from down there. We all need to chip in to get Frank W a Van Halen cassette.

What a ride! Pleased to hear you made it safely, looking forward to the video:)

John, it was great seeing you and Shelli in St Pete agian this year! Thanks for letting me hang with you in the engine room during the zinc and impeller change, LOL.
Looking at summer trip options and may head your way.

You guys need to stop giving Frank such a hard time about his age. I would never do such a thing.....

Oh, wait - nevermind.

Dale
