Our 20th wedding anniversary, the admiral has an entrapped nerve at present and can't sit down, so restaurants have been out for a while, and the boat has been our relax time.

So we planned a night out to Sydney Harbour, with the daughter studying and at exam time, more than a night was not on the agenda.

So on Friday I went down to the boat early, put all the food away, wine in the fridge etc and prepped the boat. Heather arrived at 2pm and we pretty well set straight off,

The run from where we are on Port Hacking basically means running out through the heads and out to sea, then turn North and head up the coast, past Botany Heads and onto Sydney Heads (or Port Jackson).

Just before Sydney Heads we came across the largest Seal I have seen. He was rolling around on the surface, flapping fins, and at one stage, pushed half his body up out of the water and shook himself. We sat and watched Him for 5 minutes or so.

There is an opera on in the park opposite the Opera house, I wanted to see if we could anchor off and listen to it, I had done a google search and couldn't find any info of it being closed off. But closed off it was. So we tracked across the harbour to Athol Bay which is right below Taronga Zoo, and picked up a mooring. The boat behind us I think was having a bucks party, 6 guys and 2 hookers wearing nothing but G strings and fake boobs, sorry guys no photos. So we kept the mooring rope attached to the stern of our boat so we were not looking at them, but more importantly we were looking directly at the the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

We set up the table, and loaded it with cheese, dip, biscuits and drinks and enjoyed the sunset.

Unfortunately there was the odd ripple coming through and I knew Heather wouldn't be comfortable, so we left the boys to their fun and headed around to Bantry Bay, which is an old ammunitions depot. It was dark when we arrived there, and were lucky enough to pick up the last mooring. The bay was so still, even the mooring ropes were just hanging from the bow into the water.

Dinner was looking interesting for a while. We had taken Pasta, and Heather had been out and bought cooking pans during the week to leave on the boat. I had assured her that the cooktop worked, of course I didn't test it. Took 10 minutes of checking circuit breakers, power plugs, connecting into a different power point, before I lifted the cutout switch up, the one that turns it off when you close the lid.....Then it worked like a dream.

The morning was just quiet and picturesque. Kayakers paddling past, a floating coffee shop doing the rounds. Then 2 ducks that went from boat to boat demanding breakfast.

On our way back we were lucky enough to get to the Spit Bridge whilst it was open allowing the high mast yachts to go through, then 2 Sydney Ferries passing each other.

We had booked a berth in Darling Harbour for the afternoon, and rang Nicks Seafood to order a platter to be delivered to the boat. Whilst waiting we went for a walk around Darling Harbour to stretch our legs, and just as we started to walk over the bridge, the gates closed so they could swing the middle section open, the opening of this bridge is more historic rather than navigational.

Our platter arrived and we had a lazy lunch.

The run back to Port Hacking to our Marina from Darling Harbour is around 28Nm. We logged on with Marine Rescue around 3 pm as we left Darling Harbour. Then played dodge the sailboat across the Harbour in a fairly stiff headwind. Out through the heads and turned south with the winds and waves up our stern. Low and behold found Mr Seal again roughly in the same spot feasting on all the baitfish that are around.

Had the engines sitting on around 2800RPM with tabs fully up to keep the bow high and we ran at between 13-20Kn dependant on what part of the swell we were on.

We slowed down just before we came back into the bay, and logged off Marine Rescue. We were back in the Pen and tied up just before 5pm, so pretty happy with the run.

Congrats on the 20 years! Looks like a lovely time, hope your wife's condition improves soon.

Surgery booked for May 10, so hopefully. She has spent several years trying and doing everything. So hopefully this works

Congratulations to you both! Noel and I wish you many more anniversaries and also hope that your wife's entrapped nerve surgery is a huge success. Looks like you all had a lovely anniversary expedition. We really enjoy seeing your pics and are looking forward to seeing Sydney for real in Nov and thank you for all your advice:) Brenda & Noel

Very nice photos and run down of the time spent.
We wish the best with the surgery, hopefully it's a cure for her nerve issues.

Awesome Ian, I have to organize a trip to the Harbour. Maybe next time you are going drop me a message and maybe go up together, meet you off Botany Bay. The better half does not like going out to sea :)

Will keep that in mind Barney, there are enough of us from the Sydney area, we could maybe do a meet up one day.
