205 Sport thread?

Anybody know what changed to make the 2014 205 Sport capacity 10 people instead of 8 for say the '08s?

The new ones have 19° dead rise instead of 20° but I'm not sure what else they changed. I guess its a new hull with the same deck?

I was wondering the same thing.bought an 06sport 205-shows limit of 8 people, newer shows 10 dont plan on putting 10 on board but thought it was strange that specs changed

Kinda new to this site-wondering if anybody has the convertible top for their sport models.we don't have a searay dealer locally and haven't found much on Internet .boat is put away for season but we'd like a top for next year

I'd check in the parts manuals on the SeaRay corporate site. Not sure if a vert top was even offered.

Might check with Great Lakes Boat tops to see if they can get you one. I know a convertible top was offered as part of a canvas enclosure package for the 205 but I'm not sure if it came as an individual option.

Why not a Bimini top? It will give you more air flow and you can always have curtains made to enclose it later if you need too.

They list it for 2006.

Hello,

1st post here, gonna revive this thread a little bit. My wife and I just purchased our first boat. It's a 2008 205 sport with the 5.0 TKS. We're very excited about it. Her family has a 2005 200 sport, so we know what we are getting into which is nice. I do have a few questions though.

1. The previous owners have a hydrofoil installed on the outdrive. I've heard these can place a little undue stress on the outdrive. The boat is low hours and everything looks great so I'm not concerned about the condition of things now. But, I am wondering if I should leave it, or remove it? If I remove it, what should I do with the installation holes on the outdrive? Leave them empty, fill them with bolts, fill with JB weld then sand and paint?

2. Would any of you be apprehensive about installing smart tabs if I do remove the hydrofoil? I like the idea of them. Straighter tracking, quicker to plane, plane at a lower speed for watersports. But... Any time I think about drilling through the hull, it makes me nervous, is this a legitimate concern? If you did do smart tabs, what pound piston would you choose?

3. I have a good couple of months here before we get her on the water. I'd like to make sure everything is tuned up real well considering its a used boat. I plan on replacing the impeller, the battery, and the plugs. As well as doing an oil and filter change. Anything else I should consider doing before taking her out for the first time?

4. I'm used to fishing boats more than pleasure boats, which means I'm used to having redundancy in batteries. This has a single battery with switch. Should I consider a two battery system with second switch or am I expressing a bit of overkill? We will be running the radio a lot while anchored, however it is just the stock clarion system.

Edited to add: The 4 questions above this have been submitted to a different thread so please ignore them, or look at this thread. Thanks.

5. Does anyone know where to find oem graphics packages? I'm not 100% sold on the graphics that are on it currently. I'd like to either remove them completely for a super clean look, or replace the ones I have with the wake graphics.

6. Lastly, this has the bow and cockpit snap in covers with poles. I've heard not to tow with the poles in place so they don't damage the floors. Anything to worry about? Does anyone have an aftermarket trailering cover they are happy with that has a nice tight fit?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the club... I have the same boat and have had a great time with it over the last 4 years.

I'd recommend giving the boat a try w/ the hydrofoil on and off and see if you notice a difference. I don't personally have one on mine but my family used to have one on an older boat we had. I'm leaning more towards the Smart Tabs as you mention in your second question. I just haven't pulled the trigger due to the odd shape of the transom on the boat. Every year about this time I start researching to find someone with this model who has installed them so I can hear how they worked. If you do install them I'd love to hear about the results.

I'd hook it up to some muffs and run it in the driveway before towing down to the lake for your first time. Do all of the maintenance you mentioned and then fire it up and let it get up to temp and make sure your thermostat opens and you maintain the proper temperature. Should be around 170.

I have a pretty nice aftermarket stereo setup running 3 amps, headunit and an EQ and I run two batteries. A hybrid deep cycle / start battery and then my house battery for the stereo which is a Trojan deep cycle. I have a them setup so they are completely separate so my stereo won't kill my starting battery. My first year I only had one battery with the stock head unit and I never had an issue but I also carried a jump box for emergencies. If your boat dies be sure to check the circuit breaker down by the battery, on top of the engine, the kill switch on the throttle and the fuse panel under the drivers helm. I was towed in once because I had a brain fart and forgot to check the fuse panel (which I had spares in the glove box :smt021 )

As for the graphics I would contact a Sea Ray dealer. After that I'd contact a shop that does vehicle wraps and see which one is cheaper. The wrap would give you the ability to do something custom. I have the wake graphics on mine and at times I wish it didn't have them.

I have to trailer my boat about an hour and a half to our lake and I've done it numerous times w/ the covers on and have seen no damage from the poles to the boat floor. I usually have my carpet in though so that might help. I do however think that my bow cover may have stretched more from having the poles fully extended while driving. If I drive without them on the rear seats try to flyout of the boat so at a minimum I always have the bow cover on to stop the wind from picking up the rear seats.

Hope this was helpful... only a few more months to go!

All of the above advice is 100% accurate and helpful. Good luck, and enjoy your 205.

I'd run with the hydrofoil, then test with it off to see how you like it. We don't have either product and it hasn't been an issue for us to pull slalom skiiers or wakeboarders.

Do you have a full cover for your boat? I have a 2009 205 Sport with the same tower as yours.....If so, where did you get it?

Yes. Overtons has them online. Not cheap, though. Finally need to commercially clean it after 3 years.

Has anyone installed a anchor roller and/or windlass on the front of a 205? Thinking of downsizing to a 205, but really like the simplicity of a electric windlass like on my big boat.

I've never seen it. Might be a lot of hassle making it fit on the trailer with a windlass. The open bow makes anchor deployment and retrieval pretty easy.

Could a user with a 205 and a V8 (either MPI or carb) take a picture of their engine mounts for me? I have obtained a used but good condition 350mag and I am trying to see if I can get it to fit in my 205 sport.

Thank you,

Jerry - typically the 305V8 and the 350V8 have common motor mounts. I don't have the boat easily accessible at the moment, but I'm almost sure they share mounts.

Getting a picture of the mounts might be difficult, and may not tell you what you need to know. One more thing; I don't think a 350 was an option in the 205, so your weight balance could change.

Hint: boatinfo.no is a great resource to look up the service manuals and specs on both engines.

Good luck - holler if anything else is needed.

Hey Wazzu,

the 305 and the 350 weigh the same and share the same physical dimensions. I suspect the 350 will physically fit in the engine compartment.

My reasoning behind asking for a picture of the V8 motor mounts is to compare (visually) the stringer setup and motor mounts with my V6 engined boat. I am guessing that the interior hull shape is the same between the V6 and V8 boats and that the over sized stringers I have in my boat are as large as they are so as to accommodate the V8 option, but a picture can't hurt.

I'd prefer not to go to all the trouble of removing an engine and test fitting a new one only to find out I have no way to or nowhere to bolt it to the hull.

Thx.

I'll check for you sometime this week or weekend. photo too. Any specific shots or angles?

By the way, the 4.3L V6 is just a 350 w the front 2 cylinders chopped off? My FIL is a big Chev mechanic...

No specific shots or angles, just get as clear a shot as you can of the motor mounts and stringers. I can work out the rest from there.

Thx!
