Just like Giants, Gore says 49ers were 'better team' against Ravens

There are sore losers, and then there are Gore losers. San Francisco running back Frank Gore apparently feels that the 49ers are always the better team, even in losing efforts. He passed upon praising the Ravens Sunday night after Baltimore beat San Francisco, 34-31. Gore said that the Ravens were lucky to escape with the Lombardi Trophy.
"They got away with one. We showed we were the better team. it was just a couple plays here, a couple plays there," Gore told the Associated Press.
The Ravens were up 28-6 before the 49ers put up a furious rally. San Francisco also trailed 17-0 before completing a comeback over the Falcons to advance to the Super Bowl.
Gore is no stranger to making headlines. Just two weeks ago, he was fined over $10,000 for wearing low socks in the NFC Championship game. And at Super Bowl media day last week, he said the 49ers were also the better team than the Giants, who beat them 20-17 in overtime in last season's NFC title game.
"I was so hurt, knowing we were the better team," Gore said, referring to last season.
Gore rushed for over 1,200 yards and eight TD's this season, and had 319 yards and four touchdowns in the playoffs. He torched the Ravens defense for 110 yards and a score Sunday night, but it wasn't enough.

This is why I find this team so unlikable. Sour grapes!! Pure & simple!!

From homophobic rant to Super Bowl flop for 49ers CB Culliver

NEW ORLEANS — Payback can be, well, you know, a bummer.
Chris Culliver got his five minutes of infamy this past week with some of the most homophobic and idiotic comments ever heard on radio airwaves. The hubbub he created died down, Super Bowl XLVII kicked off and Joe Flacco and the Ravens enjoyed throwing at and repeatedly beating Culliver as the 49ers came up small in their first taste of the big game in 18 years.
The Niners rallied from a 28-6 deficit to pull within 31-29, but they couldn’t complete the comeback, and the Ravens held on for a 34-31 victory. The hole was too deep to climb out of, thanks in large part to Culliver.
“I know [Culliver] feels bad,’’ linebacker Patrick Willis said. “Cully is a competitor, he wants to win on every play. Unfortunately he had a rough one.’’
A really rough one.
There’s no doubt the national audience didn’t know much leading into the week about Culliver, a second-year cornerback from South Carolina, and then was disgusted when he got on the radio and fouled up the airwaves with an anti-gay rant. The 49ers distanced themselves from the vile remarks and Culliver apologized, but the damage was done.
After embarrassing himself with his words, Culliver did pretty much the same thing with his actions on the field. He was on the wrong end of one of the more memorably bad defensive plays in Super Bowl history. It turned a 14-3 Ravens lead to 21-3 and got the heavily-Baltimore rooting crowd whipped into a frenzy of jubilation.

The Ravens faced a third-and-10 from their own 44-yard line when Flacco escaped pressure in the pocket and looked deep for speedster Jacoby Jones. Culliver, for some reason, did not respect Jones’ speed and allowed him to run right on by. Jones, wide open, leaped at the San Francisco 9-yard line to make the catch. Culliver raced back trying to recover and actually overran Jones, who fell to the turf, untouched. He got back to his feet and cut to his left, out-running Culliver and then Dashon Goldson into the end zone, completing a game-breaking 56-yard score.
“The ball was in the air forever,’’ Goldson said. “This is the worst roller-coaster game I’ve ever been a part of.’’
In the fourth quarter, Culliver, on a third-and-9 play, was called for pass interference working against Torrey Smith, giving the Ravens 14 yards and a first down to extend a drive that ended with a Justin Tucker field goal to extend Baltimore’s lead to 34-29.
“The referees have a big factor. ... They see what they want to see,’’ Culliver said.
“Didn’t think that was an interference,’’ added 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.
The Achilles’ heel of the otherwise sturdy 49ers defense is their secondary, a group that can be and has been beaten in the postseason. Culliver wasn’t alone in his misery, as safety Donte Whitner had a brutal first half. He allowed his third touchdown in the postseason when he could not stay with Anquan Boldin splitting the seam on a 13-yard scoring strike from Flacco to make it 7-0.
“All week we were working on double-teaming the guy,’’ Whitner said. “Just a bad situation out there.’’
Culliver didn’t help the Niners late in the first quarter when he couldn’t out-muscle Boldin on a 25-yard completion. A huge Niners comeback closed the deficit to 28-23, but Culliver struck again, failing to stay with Boldin on a 30-yard catch and run on third-and-3 to put the Ravens on the 49ers’ 35-yard line late in the third quarter.
“They targeted him a few times, got a couple of big plays on him,’’ Whitner said of Culliver.
A bad ending to a bad week.

Boo Hoo Hoo!!! Cry me a river guys!!! I'm so sick of hearing this from this team EVERY time they lose. I'm sorry Humph, but if they just shut up and gave credit to the team that beats them they would be a lot more palatable!

Ok, off my soap box now!!

This is just a stop down the road for the kids raised in the everbody's a winner world. No losers anymore just winners and the " better team" that didn't win. :smt043

The O Coordinator for the 49'ers should be questioned for the final 4 plays of the could have been game winning drive. Randy Moss should be pissed too. He was wide open on numerous plays including in the end zone and no balls came his way. I know, he did make a couple catches but he could have had a couple of TD's as well. All in all a good game thanks to the power outage. Belive it or not but I think it really helped avoid a blow out for the 49'ers.

All of you can have your fun but remember, this was Colin's 10th game and Harbaugh's second year as an NFL head coach. We did lose to the NY Giants in OT just missing at trip to the Superbowl next year. No excuses, the Niners played poorly early, dumb late and barely lost. The Ravens played well and had better coaching. Not all 49er fans whine and make excuses BTW. ALL teams cry about what could have/should been after a big loss. I do like John's demeanor better than Jim's too.

Humph,

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying. I'm not saying anything about the fans- At all. You are a gentleman and a good fan, of your team and of the sport.
My problem lies with the mentality of this team. They never step up and give credit to their opponents. When you get beat, tip your hat and move on with your life. The 49ers were still complaining about their loss last season to the Giants this week at the Super Bowl press conferences. Dude, that was last year and you are playing for a championship this week!! WTF?
They are a good team, that fact is indisputable! They make it to the NFC Championship last year and the Superbowl this year. That is a lot to be proud of, no question. Be happy with your accomplishments and make the changes that are needed to reach the ultimate goal of a championship! That's all. Look at the Giants, not to be a homer, but they always give credit to the opponents and then state what they need to do to get better!
Humph, you are a class act and I'm sorry if you thought my comments were at all aimed at you.
