2013 CSR Middle Chesapeake Raft-Up

Anyone know of any slightly more south bay raftup spots? We may be able to pull in some new folks if we move a bit further south. I know the Bodkin spot is up on the way to Baltimore and Conquest Beach is somewhere just north/east of Kent Narrows in the Chester River and has gotten good reviews. The Rhode River spot is a bit further down but still north of Herrington/Deale. I dont know of anything more south than that other than the little chop tank, which I've never successfully made it to on multiple attempts due to weather.

What is "the Horse Farm"?

I do have a middle-sized nettle pool if we run into that later in the summer. I should qualify that statement with a few caveats and disclaimers.... I bought it off craigslist and it was never used... so in theory it works. I've had it for a season and a half but it's still unused. Lets hope all this rain keeps the nettles out longer!

As was suggested previously when I was planning the Mears event, maybe next year we should do a marina event further south like Herrington, and then a raftup later further north like conquest or wherever.

The sea nettles have already arrived in the lower Potomac...I counted a few walking up and down the pier just the other day. This was the day after the heavy rains began, so maybe they will disappear for a couple more weeks. Way early this year...

I have one of those Nettle Nets; they do work! We usually find a place that is jellyfish-free, but have used it on a rare occasion. It's kind of weird to be in it though, with the mass of jellyfish right outside. It's also a bit discomforting when it brushes up against your legs or feet due to the tidal current. They need to put better weights in the bottom.

Holy Crud! You are right.... It's starting, although i didn't see any in Eastern Bay / Kent Narrows this weekend, which looks like it's turning red on this map. Then again, I wasnt really looking for them.

Actually I meant I hope it inflates / holds air. My sister also has one on her boat, and I agree, it can be weird when it brushes up against you, but it's WAY better than getting stung. We had problems with the net collapsing (not staying circular) when we first used it. Turns out we weren't inflating the ring enough. Also had problems with it as the boat moved. The Nettle-net guy told us to tie a line from the stern of the boat out to the anchor rode so that the boat sat sideways to the wind. He said keep the net on the inside of that triangle and it shouldnt move as much. I need to email them and verify that, becuase I many not have been understanding clearly at the boat show. It was early, but there may have been the earliest twinges of a painkiller-haze starting. :) The one time I experimented trying to make that triangle, the line from the stern eventually slipped up the anchor rode and the tranigle went back to more of a off-straight line. We mostly use it when rafted up with other boats, so you can tether it from a wider set of points off multiple sterns vs just my 10'5 beam.

So much planning is required to get a big CSR raft up going. There are a bunch of us up north of the bridge. I check the name on every Sea Ray that I come across looking for CSR folks, and I've only met 3 of you. I often wonder how many of the boats anchored near me in all of my usual spots are CSR folks. Where are the rest of you hiding? lol...

Where is everyone planning on going this weekend? Maybe a few of us can manage to find each other.

30% chance we go to Fairlee, 30% chance that we stay close and anchor near Hart Miller, and 30% chance that I mow the lawn and clean out the garage... :smt013

Looking for a place to go anchor out on Sunday. Hart Miller is usually where we go but open for others. How is Sue Creek or Middle River past the no Wake?

Sue Creek is great, always calm, Hart Miller not so much for a raft off..............I'm at BYC, I could row out and raft up with ya, maybe Bill (hack4alivin) might make an appearence.

As far as a CSR raft off, Fairlee has my vote.

Jon,
Are you still out of commission except for the July 4th weekend?

I have something every weekend from now until late August except for Friday night July 5th and the July 16th weekend.

If the raft up is the July 4th weekend I would arrive Friday morning and depart Saturday afternoon.

I'm not a big fan of traditional rafting up at HMI, either because it is so rough. We usually drop our hook and back up as close as we can to the beach and set a stern anchor. When friends arrive, we have them back up next to us and do the same. If we want to do it further off shore, we usually set our hooks and back the boats up close enough together to tie dock lines between the stern cleats. With 3 or more boats, there isn't any movement at all. The trick is to have each boat set their hook in a different direction, and keep about 5-6' between the stern corners. If you want to get on another boat, you just pull thier stern over and step aboard.

It sounds like Fairlee Creek is the best spot.

Fairlee is fun, but can be a haul for some. It's also tricky geting through the entry channel and shallow inside (mostly under 5' I believe). That said folks go all the time. I try to go if it ends up there.

Has anyone tried Swann Creek outside Rock Hall?

Well L&G, I just looked up the location of Fairlee Creek and while it looks like a good location I don't believe Gimme Time will make the trip as it is about 110 km which at .75 GPM = about $1,200 for fuel along. Middle Bay raft up would need to be alittle closer to Middle of the bay for us at this point and time so maybe next year.

Have a great weekend and we will try to catch you some other time.

any suggestions on a location you could reach?

I would suggest Cacaway Island on Langford Creek, which is off of the Chester River, just before conquest beach. This very secluded, with few boat wakes, nice small beach, good holding, great scenery with bald eagles and herons as company. A great place to spend the night in a raft up. This is also more middle of the bay for those that may have to travel from the south.

As you approach the island, keep it to your port side and anchor in the small horsehoe cove or off the point- but be carefull as the depth here changes quickly.

[QUO The Horse Farm is inside the hook or cove behind Gibson Island. You head for Corn Field Creek and then before entering the creek you bear right and the cove is on your right. Rhode River is a good spot but beware of High Island which is submerged. Jub Cove and Fairlee are well protected.
