I recently bought a slightly used 2011 Sea Ray 270 SLX. I love this boat, but one complaint is the built-in ski locker is constantly wet - which makes for a moldy environment for my skis and bumpers that I store in there.

I would have thought the ski locker would drain back to the engine bilge, but instead it is its own self-contained compartment, with its own separate bilge pump. This second bilge is mounted in its own slightly lower reservoir within the ski locker. The bilge works, but there is always that last half inch or so of standing water around it, making for a damp locker when it sits closed for weeks at a time.

I keep the boat on a lift and it is always covered with the factory mooring cover. I am trying to diagnose how water keeps getting into the ski locker.

The first thing I noticed is that other areas of the boat have drains into the ski locker – the cooler storage under one of the seats, the head compartment, the lockers under the bow cushions. I even think the bow anchor locker is routed to drain into the ski locker. What a bummer, I wish all those areas drained to the engine bilge, not the ski locker! Plus the ski locker hatch has no seal, so a lot of the water that hits the deck (from washing or rain) flows around the locker hatch and into the ski locker.

I am not sure if there is anything I can do to help the situation. Maybe it is just a poor design. Anyone else run into this and come up with a solution?

Thanks!
David

Other than possibly looking into seeing if you can extend/reroute those other drains directly to the bilge, which may turn out to be a big job... My first thought would be to simply leave the ski locker hatch open when you leave. At least you'll get some air circulation through there, which will cut down on the mold.

Same problem on my sundeck. Why the heck does the deck not drain overboard. Only complaint with my boat

I have a 06 Sundeck. Decided to wet slip this year instead of dry stack. Liked having the boat in the water to come and go. First rain of the baoting season and my ski lockers had water in them. Same setup, everything drains throght the lockers. You would think that by 2011 Sea Ray would have figured it out???

When Sea Ray redesigned the 260SD again in early 2010, they added a false floor in the ski locker to keep everything in there elevated, along with a good, draining lip around the edge. But the 250/270 SLX is designed a little differently. As the OP noted, the ski locker DOES NOT drain directly into the bilge. Instead, the locker has it's own bilge pump.

Mine is one of the new designed and it has a box under the raised floor in the locker and it has no drain. The drain lip drains into the locker thus filling the box with no drain at all

Do you have the rear facing aft seat (swim platform)? Wow - you must have one of the first ones - I didn't even know there was ever an '09 produced of the newest design. I'll have to look closer at the one in our showroom - maybe I'm mistaken.

Just looked at a '13 260SD that's on our floor. The forward ski locker drains underneath the main ski locker directly to the bilge. The main ski locker's "drip ledge" (that surrounds the opening) drains (via a hose to keep the locker dry) below the locker's false floor to a channel-way that connects with the drain-way from the forward locker. In essence, both ski lockers drain to the bilge.

David, another thought... if simply keeping the locker lid open doesn't help, maybe just make it a habit to sponge it out? I think keeping the hatch open should work, though. Another option -- and this is just a shot to left field -- possibly redesigning the sump-pump area to accept a sealed sump box (like what is used in cruisers) or possibly even sealing the area with a removable lid. I haven't looked into a 250/270's ski locker in quite a while, so I'm not sure I can give any specific help without seeing it.

That at is an improvement on mine.

The mooring cover is not water proof either, or at least mine isn't. During a good rain my 185 will be soaked, with cover on.

The mooring cover from Sea Ray keeps my 205 dry, even after sustained heavy rains. Do you ever use any 303 to keep it water repellent?
