Zeus Pods - Cummins Diesel
I am a recent owner of a 2010 Sea Ray 450. I previously had a 2008 Sea Ray 380 Sundancer that was gas. Just curious to know if there is anything that I need to know about the 450 that people have discovered over the years. Common issues with the boat? Tips or Trade Secrets I should know about?

Kurt-

Congrats on the new boat. The 2010 450 is one of my favorites. With the Zeus pods you should have a good amount of space in front of your engines. With that configuration it's a decent size engine room for a 45' boat. Good place to store a tool chest and keep some spare parts.

I'm sure a survey would have identified any issues that need addressing. I can't offer anything major or specific to that boat other than it's a joy to drive and handles well with the pods.

Thanks! I picked her up on Saturday. Survey did not find anything wrong. Great Boat, Just have a Chime that goes off when I turn off the Batteries. Not sure what that is.

Hello!! This is pretty cool - we're new 2010 450 DA owners also and we're also in Seattle!

Where are you moored? Where did you purchase your boat? Did you get it locally or bring it in? Do you have the 380 or the 480 Cummins QSB engines?

We're at Fisherman's Terminal. We've only had ours since the end of February and we're definitely learning a lot.

The chime you're hearing is normal - I'm not sure exactly what it is but we have the same thing.

One suggestion I have is that you may want to consider contacting Cummins Northwest and schedule a Captain's briefing. We worked with John Hernandez who is one of their trainers and he was excellent. New owners receive this service for free but used vessel owners can pay for the briefing for only $250. It's well worth it and John goes out of his way to walk you through every facet of the engine room and gives you a good schedule for maintenance and things to check prior to a cruise. He also provided some really great engine performance stats. His number is 425-235-3400.

I'll shoot you a PM with my contact information. Hopefully we can help each other as we discover our new boats!

Not sure if you guys have one, haven't seen it - but you should start a 2010+ 450 thread.

My favorite boat out there for the layout, wife and I are looking to move up to one a year from now when our oldest finishes college. With our 10 and 12 year olds, that layout is a perfect one.

Enjoy your boats, hopefully a thread will get going on them.

I'd love for this to be the start of an official thread for our boats. There are other 450 DA owners out there but you're the first owner I'm "met" who has the same model year as we do.

Glad to have someone else with the same boat for a change!!

Mini-update - we finally pulled the trigger on a new dinghy!! I'll post some pictures after the weekend. It's a new Apex A-12 Eurosport with a 30 HP Tohatsu outboard. It's a center console dinghy and after we took it out for a spin last night it was evident that it's going to be more than enough for what we will need for this boat and for future boats. It's a bit of a challenge to maneuver at dead slow speeds (or maybe I just need more time with it!) but it drives like a dream and it's super stable. We had myself, my husband and our 16 year old son in the dinghy last night and we were very comfortable - it was super roomy.

The extended swim platform with integrated chocks works perfectly (Sea Ray brand with Sealift hydraulics). Looking forward to trying out the setup when we go to Poulsbo this weekend. I don't know how much, if any, difference that extra weight will make regarding performance, getting out of the hole, etc.

Stay tuned for pictures!

The 2010 450 sure is a nice layout inside and out...especially for a boat that has only 14" more beam than the 12' a 2005 340 has. The cockpit is especially nice.
The 2015 model added port and starboard electrically-opening helm windows! :smt038 Nice touch!! I guess just like a car, people want the option of more fresh air and opening windows in an enclosed helm. I'm surprised it took Sea Ray so long to recognize it. Of course one can only wonder if this 450 will be dc'd since Sea Ray has introduced the new 450. In as much as the current plan is to make all the sport yachts and yachts like the new 510 etc, one would expect the 2016's (leftover 2015's?) to be the the last run.

Closer inspection of pictures of all the recent model years "looks" like the window frame is the same.
I wonder if one could pay for a retrofit, ie., replace the 2010 frames with the 2015 plus the wiring and the window motors etc. Should be considerably cheaper to buy a 2010 and retrofit a windshield than to buy a 2015, n'est ce pas? Personally I prefer a manually opened window, one less thing to corrode in a high heat saltwater environment like southwest Florida. Given that thought and the ability to have windows put in windshields....hmmm! I could find use for an enclosed helm.

One of the great things about the 450 is the helm seating. Captain on one side, mate (or admiral if you must) on the other. Only on airplanes are you forced to sit so closely to someone... I love my awesome wife, but on an all day cruise...air conditioning or not, there's no way for two people to be comfortable in one big chair. Zip around for an hour, drive to dinner...okay. All day out exploring or just cruising at 8mph. for hours on end... no way.

Go big or go home, eh Sandy

How does this compare to my 09 43...? Same boat?

We are now enjoying our sixth season in our 450 and love it. Perfect boat for the two of us.

On an annual basis, I change the engine/generator oil and filters and have dealer change out the gear lube. About every other season, I have the dealer change the upper trans and steering fluid as well as the fuel filters. I've had the impellers changed every two years but they looked like new each time. So I now two sets of spares.

Over the 5 full seasons I am getting about 1 mpg while cruising at about 30 mph at 2700 rpms.

Hope you enjoy yourself as much as we do ours.
