I know another Prop question :smt021

Anyway it's a 2008 Sundeck 200 with 5.0 MPI / Alpha 1
The problem is getting on plane & maintaining a consistent speed.

I'm assuming it's a stock Prop ( 19 Vengenge)
Wot is about 45-48mph at 5,000rpm

Most of our time is spent wakeboarding and simply cruising around. Top Speed is not a major concern. We are looking for holeshot and consistent speed control.
I tried one of those bolt on hydrafoil deals from West marine. Didn't help much. Our boys want a few ballast bags for the bow lockers. Is this the correct sollution or should I invest in a new prop or both? If I go with Ballast bags I would go with 2 - 350Lb bags & place them in the bow storage lockers and use a portable pump. NO HOLES BEING DRILLED HERE.

Please reply
Thanks,
Troy & Bridgette

There are a lot of threads which talk about smart tabs. The weight in the bow will help but if you put 700# weight up there it would be dangerous. 300# would be good. Those bags are used by wakeboarder guys to sink the stern to get a bigger wake. Be careful not to overload the boat. It might not seem dangerous but it can handle very differently overloaded. You also could drop in pitch but you would be underproped and could overspeed the engine so be careful with that too.

Thanks for your advice. I noticed a 205 sport in you signature. Do you have any suggestions beside the smart tab option. I also read about the concern with to much weight and swamping the bow as a result. I don't think I need any more weight in the stern. The wake is fine for now. I just want to plane out faster and maintain a consistent speed.

I put a 19p high five on my boat this year and it made a ton of difference. Expensive, but worth it!!

Keep the drive trimmed in. You can switch props. If you add a blade or two and also go down in pitch it will give you better acceleration and will preform a little better at low speed than what you are using now. It will also help keep your rpm's down compared to a 3 blade. I found a mix of dropping pitch and going to a well cupped 4 blade worked well for me. Btw is this the 260 hp mpi the 240 hp efi or the 220 carb?

Thanks
It's a 260 mpi
Where do I look for a new prop. Any suggestions please.

I spoke with JT at Nettles propellers in Austin TX and he was very helpful. I also had an excellent experience with the service folks at Powertech the makers of my 4 blade prop. Its not a high 5 but it works very well for me for less than half the cost.

I was having similar issues with my 2003 200 Sundeck. Installed a new 4-blade, aluminum prop (18 pitch I think) and I'm very happy with the results. I talked with the guys at James Propeller in Dallas, TX and they shipped the prop that day. Trim tabs were discussed but so far the prop change has ended that conversation.

Thanks for your input.
How's the Alumminum prop holding up? Also do you remember who made your new prop? I keep reading that alumminum props won't last long at all. One small strike and it's done.
Thanks again.

Ok I need more advice here guys.
Does anyone have experience with the high 5 17" pitch prop on a 260hp combo. I ask because I just bought one off ebay. I think I will have to be careful
regarding WOT. I mainly wanted better holeshot & consistent speed control. Will this set up overstress my motor?

What was your wot with the stock prop? I would keep it to about 5000 rpm max. The motor will sound an overspeed alarm if you go too high so if you hear it back off a little. You stated you were already at 5000 with the 19" 3 blade so you potentially can overspeed but the engine guardian shouldn't let you damage the engine. Other then that the new prop will be fine.

We do not water ski or wake board, but the Bennett trim tabs made a big difference without the extra weight.

On the stock prop I am almost on the rev limiter ( just under 5000rpm) my concern is stressing the motor at lower speeds. We really don't rum wide open to often at all. most of our day is spent on the wakeboards at 22-25mph.

The motor will actually have an easier time spinning that prop, albeit at a higher RPM for the same same speed. It should have a mother of a hole shot though. No harm other than fuel economy and you may be limited on the top end as it will want to over rev earlier, before you hit WOT.

I have a 21P High Five on mine and just purchased a 19P High Five off of Craigslist. My boat was lugging a bit when loaded and I wanted better hole shot and use of the full power band. I should have it today and am itching to try it out.

Thanks,
Please keep me posted on how your boat responded with the 19 pitch. I may go to that size if the one I have coming doesn't work out. I will also update my results when I have it installed.

Thanks again,
Troy

aaSANY0110.jpgI realize this thread is 5 months old and that you've probably decided on and installed a new prop already, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in anyway. I have no experience, having bought my first boat this past season, and am the last person to make any suggestions. However, I want to share my experience concerning props. My boat came with a stainless Mirage Plus 21 pitch three blade. It seemed fine until I drove a Ski Nautique and loved the acceleration out of the hole. I had a Revolution 4, 19 pitch, 4 blade stainless put on and it was a great decision. I lost a few mph at top end but it takes off like crazy and planes in no time.

What prop did you end up going with?

I also have a 2004 searay sun deck 200 and have problems getting on plane with a full boat of people. It has the 5.0mpi and currently running the vengeance 19p 3 blade prop. Anyone have the same set up and the results of the 19p high five prop? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know this is a super old post and is a long shot but worth a try. Thanks!
