2008 CSR Barnegat Bay Regatta and Gunkhole Event

i'll keep an ear out on channel 72. problem is my vhf is on the bridge so i may not hear it. i'll also keep the handheld with me. once you are line of sight we'll spot you and head over to the radio to figure out the logistics.

not sure if teens would like them but they have a huge water trampoline and a big floating rock climbing thing. also rent kayaks. i think last year things were $15/half hour per kid.

weather looks awesome! hope the jellies stay away.

I'll be there with a boat load of everthing time 11am give or take pelican island location channel 72 comm Hope that's right. Passenger list Bruce and Sandy 2 kids 15/21 my mother "MiMI" and who ever else can free load.

In checking the chart pelican island is indicated, comeing from the north heading south turn before the bridge, follow the sticks and look for the searays. Am I close to being right?

Topgun, that's about it.....

I haven't been back in there for a few years now, but I remember there being some skinny water just out of the sticks....even in the sticks when you get to the area where the houses are to your stbd when coming in. Also, again from memory, when you get to where the sticks 'end' and you are in the 'lagoon' area you have to watch for some low water there also. Go slow and don't 'mush'....

One more thing.....just recently I've been noticing that the green heads have been relentless. Last week, when coming up from atlantic city in the no wake zones by LBI, we were overwhelmed. I had to get out the shop vac to clean up the cockpit area from all the carcus'. They've been in my home area all week, which is only a few miles south of here. I'd suggest that you bring whatever you think works (skin-so-soft, deet, garlic, etc) just in case......

Well it turned out I should have left the 2 boys floating in the tube somewhere in the Metedaconk. After a late start and some heavy tubing in the jellyfish infested waters, everyone was "done" for the day. (including Sheree) They just wanted off. Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet up with everyone. How was it?

a bit breezier than i would have liked it (mild anchor troubles) but an otherwise perfect day on the water. nary a jelly, kids went on the water trampolines and kayaks and we stayed from noon to about 6pm or so. thanks to all who attended. it was great to meet everyone.

more (and probably BETTER) photos to come when i get them from alex. he was the "historian" for the day!

Lots of fun. It was great to meet up with everyone, especially, Ron, Alex and their families since we've interacted so much on the forum. It was great to put face to the names.

Now if I could just forget the fiasco of leaving. My wife volunteered to bring up the anchor, which was fine. She's done it before. But she didn't watch as the splice between the rode and chain went though the windlass. The splice hung up and the chain wedged in the capstan, blowing the 105 amp breaker. I had to get into the engine room to reset it, but the dog, then my wife decided to get on the hatch as it was starting to come up. Finally got the breaker reset, but the chain was wedged tight. By then we were drifting across one of the other anchor rodes, so I couldn't use the engines to control the boat without risking cutting the rode or wrapping a shaft. Figured the wind would continue to push us back and off the rode so I went forward and manually retrieve the very muddy chain and anchor so that wouldn't foul in another anchor.

Stupid chain was so muddy that my hands kept slipping, but was able to pull it all up. I have a washdown for the anchor, but could not one hand the chain and wash away the mud at the same time. Drifted past the rode without playing bumper boats and stowed the anchor. We were able to idle out of the lagoon. Once we got into the bay, a few good sharp pulls on the chain and wiggles with the controls got everything free. Guess I should have reminded my wife to retrieve the splice slowly. The Lofrans Progress I windlass has a very quick no-load retrieval speed.

Best regards,
Frank

Guys, it was a pleasure meeting everyone. It was very nice to finally put all boat to the faces and we made new friends Eric’s and Rudy’s families. We’ve missed Dom and Brian, so may be we’ll meet up next time. I thought you guys would make it.

I got few tips from Frank on wash-down installation.

Considering the circumstances, everything turned out quite smoothly. Ron, you forgot the make-a-wish foundation with those race boats. I was like 100’ from you and couldn’t hear a damn thing on the radio due to their noise. The wind was a bit stronger than desired, but it was still comfortable on the sundecks. It was great that all kids were able to interact right away and had some fun with water activities and swimming.

Hey Frank, your departure was eventful. I guess, it was just not a good call in a given situation to allow admiral to have full control of the windlass (I personally wouldn’t take the chance). But, this situation had provided some lessons (for me at least), the most interesting one was a trick on driving the boat from the sundeck J

Ron, we took most of the equipment, but forgot the computer cord for our camera. So, give me few days (I’m not sure when we’re back home) and I’ll send you all the pictures.

I hope we raft up again soon. Also, next time I hope no one is donating 25lbs of ribs at the marina J, so we can have dinner on our boats or at a restaurant nearby.

Is anyone else coming to Aquapalooza besides Eric’s family?

Cheers,
Alex.

yeah, i didnt mention the (seemingly) 50,000 go-fasts that we had to contend with for that NOISY 3 hour stretch! but it was for a good cause!

i didnt get any of those ribs - not a big rib guy - i actually spent almost an hour after we returned trying to get the chocolate pudding like mud off my anchor and chain. YUCK! spent another 2 hours sunday morn washing the boat, and ANOTHER 2 hours cutting off a near shredded part of rode (line) and eye-splicing the thimble into the GOOD section of line. not a result of the day's events, but cleaning the mud brought to my attention how close to severed one of the three strands of 5/8" anchor line was!

looking forward to the next get-together. as for aquapalooza, we will be going down with four boats. me, james, eric and rudy. wont be staying the evening - we've got a slip at Silver Cloud Harbor Marina in forked river for the night (pool, water and electric, restaurant - we're not good a roughing it  ). we should hook up again. hoping to get to tices around 11am or so.

Sorry I missed you guys....I had unexpected guests stay the weekend and they had a 1 year old who had never been on a boat. We did finally get the 1 year old calmed down enough for a quick ride on Sunday afternoon down the T.R. but he wanted nothing to do with boats on Saturday. I'm sure that all of you parents know/remember what it's like to convince a 1 year old to do something that they REALLY don't want to do...:smt089....

Anyway, I hope to be able to join up at the next BBR&GE...

BTW....Got this email this afternoon from MarineMax.....

Hello All!

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on our plans for the 2008 Sea Ray Aquapalooza event at Tices Shoal on Barnegat Bay, Saturday, July 19th. As of today, we have over 200 boats signed up for a total of 1,300 people for this one event!

Location/Time

MarineMax will have a number of host boats anchored in the area with the Aquapalooza banners starting at 9am. You will be able to identify the location through the banners, MarineMax flags and live band on the barge. The event starts at 10 am and runs until 3pm.

What to Expect
If this is your first raft-up, no worries! MarineMax will help each boat raft up upon arrival. Entertainment will be provided by live band “Total Soul” who will be singing all your favorite hits! Due to the size of the event MarineMax is unable to provide refreshments for everyone. Therefore, you will need to bring your own food and drink for the day.

Photos
Digital photographs are encouraged as we will be creating a photo album after the event and perhaps some high resolution shots will make the MarineMax “Lifestyles” magazine. We’ll also submit your photos to the Sea Ray, Aquapalooza website!

T-shirts
Aquapalooza t-shirts are expected to be in very shortly. You will receive a second email confirming they are in and ready to be picked up. T-shirts can be picked up at the Green Brook location. T-shirts will not be handed out the day of the event nor will they be mailed to your home.
Please wait for the email confirming their arrival at the stores before coming in to pick them up.

Weather
While we hope for the best, we can not always count on Mother Nature. Therefore, if we do need to postpone Aquapalooza due to inclement weather you will be notified via email and a rain date will be set.

This is intended to be a fun event for everyone and a great chance to meet new boaters and have fun with old friends. Please be safe and enjoy the day!

dom

sorry we missed you. i think if more boats came (bridog, OSD and topgun), we'd have had to pick up anchor and move entirely, since we had dragged almost into the channel as it were! everyone with an anchor out that day had a story to tell, but none was more interesting than frank's!

will we be seeing you at tices on saturday? jon is not coming. he wont be boating because he's going to see a concert - it was either barry manilow, celine dion or the oak ridge boys. i forget exactly.

Sorry we missed you, Dom. Was looking forward to meeting you. Also was looking forward to meeting Brian. Stuff happens.

Holy cow! 200 boats?! I'm staying home, I think. Just what I need is some doofus of a former Meridian owner to plow into me.

Best regards,
Frank C

Frank, I was looking forward to meeting you, Ron, and the CSR gang. Unfortunately I was out numbered. Maybe it was mutiny. I made everyone wear a Sea Ray shirt that day for the raft up.

I too miss it and I'm sorry, since I really wanted intoduce myself and meet everyone. I did make it to the spot around 3pm and didn't see anyone except a lot of loud go fasts. This was my first time at this anchorage. Not bad easy to find and navigate plus calm water. Looking foward to this weekend. Hope again to see ya all.

topgun
we were there in full force at 3pm! we were just south of the gofasts. darn - missed you by that much!

you know i thought so but hesitated because there were buncing up in the channel and with the wind from the south I retreated. Damn.

Here are some pictures:

Ron, I'm not sure how to add large pics. Everytime I try it I get message that an image is too large. I'll send you the complete set and may be you'll be able to upload larger photos.

For all the years on the bay I haven't seen conditions where I would cancel my trip on 240DA. With 320 everything in this mass of water is a walk in the park.
