When I brought my boat out of storage and fired it up for the first time this year (2008 185 Sport with the 4.3 Mercruiser V6), all gauges except the oil pressure gauge worked as usual. The motor was running perfectly for 30 seconds, but the oil gauge read 0 psi. This is my 5th season with the boat, and this was new to me.

The gauge is electric, and all wiring/fuses etc. looked perfect.

I called my trusted mechanic, and he said those gauge needles can sometimes stick in the spring after sitting in storage for 5 months. He suggested to tap on the gauge. It worked. I restarted the motor, and the needle instantly popped up to over 40 psi pressure, and is functioning perfectly now on several rides.

Of course he also said it could be other things, including the motor is starving for oil, so if that doesn't work quickly, shut the motor off right away and seek help from a mechanic.
