2007 Plans? Let's hear 'em!

Thinking about going over to Channel island marina and cruising the channel islands ...

That trip's been on my list for a couple of years now! Don't know if it will happen next year, but the general plan would be to launch out of San Pedro. It's only 19 miles from there to Catalina. We'd go in the Fall during their annual "Pirates' Week". I hear it's a great party! Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's the beginning of lobster season at that time as well!

This Spring we will cruise from Sacramento to Bethel Island to join some friends on a cruise to San Francisco Bay and then north up the Petaluma River to Napa. We've never been up that way, but what the heck! It's wine country, so how "bad" can it be??

Where is Government Island? Is it upstream or downstream from the Airport on the Columbia river? I hear about it all the time, but I don't have a clue where it is. Does it have a sandy beach to pull up and spend the weekend or are there docks? Hiking?

The 224 acre island is upstream a few miles from the airport and can only be reached by boat. There are sandy beaches, docks, and hiking! The interior of the island is a protected natural area, but you can hike around the outside for miles. Because the docks are often packed during weekends, there are plans to add a new group next year.

Not far upstream from Govt Island is Reed Island. It has nice sandy beaches and you often see tents set up on shore.
Reed Island

Then just a couple miles above that is Sand Island. Only the side of the island facing the river is normally accessable by our boats, the south side is usually too shallow. But it is all sand, and you can hike the hills. Unless you solidly beach the boat, you need to be prepared with at least two anchors, maybe 3. One off the bow in 20 or 30 feet of water, one of the stbd stern in the sand on the beach to hold the boat against the current, and maybe one more off the port stern, again in the sand on the beach, to keep the wind from blowing you upstream into the next boat. But in general it is not crowded with boats. There is a boat ramp at Rooster Rock State Park right next door, but don't count on using it. It is normally too silted in to get a boat of any size out into the river.

Then a few miles upstream from Sand Island is Skamania Island. Again a lot of sandy beach. The downstream end of the island just tapers off into the water is you can sort of see if you look at the google image instead of map. I have been there by boat when the only other occupants came by helicopter. Has been a few years ago, maybe 25.

Thanks for the links to the island near Portland! I fly in and out of Portland quite often and I always see Government Island out the window on the approach. I just didn't know what it was called. I often see boats there for the weekend, some with tents and others without. It looks like a great place to spend some time. I'll have to convince the Admiral we need to drag the boat down and check it out next year!
