Looking for what has been done for replacing the factory battery charger...

I have the factory battery setup, 4 group 31's and a 5th for the bow thruster... the stock charger (intelli-power 30A, model pd2030, 3 bank) has been turning itself on/off, connections to it have been checked... I think its time to replace.

I spend alot of time on a mooring and typically run the genny 1.5hrs in the am and 2hrs in the evening to charge batt's and get hot water... Should I stay with a 30Amp? or jump up to a 40amp?

With 5 G-31's, I think a 50+ amp could be the way to go. 40a at the min.

If the wiring is sized properly I would go with a 50. I had the same 30 and went with this 40 with 4 31's and it does well. A 30 amp as stock on that boat with a thruster is a bit light imo. Is the thruster factory? 20180506_154613.jpg

Thank you both for the reply. Yes, the thruster is factory.

I went with a ProNautic 12-60. Installed a dataline to a remote digital panel in the helm which I like as it quickly gives me the information I need on the operation of the charger without having to look in the ER.

I have the 2006 version of your boat. The original in my boat was a Protech 4 40 amp charger with only 4 group 31's (no dedicated barttery for the bow thruster). This time last year i upgraded to the Promariner Pronautic 12-50 amp charger.

I did have to upgrade breakers in the electrical panels in the cabin and bilge and also the wiring from the charger to the electrical panel in the bilge. In our summer holidays I am on a mooring for up to 10 days at a time and had no issues with the lead acid batteries (sealed calcium) when running the genny in the morning and evenings for an hour or so at a time.

For your boat I would be installing a 50 amp smart charger as a minimum.

Assuming you have 100 a/h group 31 batteries x 5 = 500 a/h in total. You would typically size your charger to be an absolute minimum of 10% of your total a/h plus dc loads when on a mooring. That would mean a minimum of 50 amps plus dc loads which could be as much as 10 amps, especially at evening/night if you have non-led cabin/cockpit lights along with 2 fridges and a freezer, etc. Going undersized in the charger just means you will need to run the genny for longer for the batteries to recharge. Smart chargers will adjust the amps accordingly, so going larger will not be detrimental to your batteries.

I have 4 x 110 a/h batteries for 440 a/h in total plus factored in 10 amp dc loads to size my charging requirements at a 50 amp charger.
