Removed the carb today to have it rebuilt and noticed a spacer under the carb. The spacer is approximately 1" thick with a gasket on the top and bottom. Is the spacer factory or is this something thrown in by the previous owner?

Phenolic spacers are used to insulate carburetors from the heat of the intake manifold.
Not so much for while the engine is running, but when you shut down a hot engine, the heat from the intake manifold can boil the gasoline in the carburetor fuel bowl. This makes it very difficult to restart a hot engine.

It was standard on mine. I have the 2bbl Mercarb.
