2006 Sea Ray Select 4.3L Question

Hi...New to the message board area. Question...I'm about to close on a deal for a 2006 Searay 200 select boat this weekend. It has the Wakeboard option and high five stainless steel prop. It only has the 4.3L fuel injection motor. The sea ray dealership says it will be ok to pull up skiers, the owner states he has no problem pulling up a 220lb wakeboarder, however, my friend who bought a new 2007 crownline says stay away......the 4.3L engine is not enough power and I will regret it. I need a honest, unbiased opinion. Any thoughts or suggestions......Thanks.

Is the 4.3L motor option enough power??????

Welcome to the board. You may want to post which model Select you are buying and where you are located. For example, if you were boating on Lake Tahoe a 4.3 MPI may not be enough power. However, if you are boating at sea level, you may have enough power.

Based on what you are telling me, I would assume you have a 200 Select or similar. If this is the case it would probably be adequate. If you wanted to be certain, simply take your wake boarder and crew with you for a sea trial prior to delivery and see if it meets your needs. I had a High 5 on my previous boat, a 19' crownline powered by a 5.0 LX (205 HP) and the High 5 improved the boat's bottom end performance dramatically.

I'd go at least a 5.0, I've got a 185 w/ the 4.3 Carbed w/ 190horses and I'd love more power, I've got a SS prop and go 50MPH top end...

Thanks for the quick responses....I am beginning to like this site already. I edited my post. I am considering the 2006 Searay 200 select. I mainly boat on the river in Minnesota and hitup the local sandbar and an occassional lake with my friends.

Never mind. I missed it. You do have a 200 Select. Once again, probably adequate power, but not much more than that. For what it's worth, our dealer equips this model with the 5.0 MPI. A sea trial with a typical load will answer your questions.

Usually people suggest staying away from the standard engine option. Will it get the job done, sure, but your friend is right. No one ever complains about having too much power.

I have the 4.3 in our 185 and love it but there again my boat is 32% lighter than the 2006 200 select and holds 30% less gass. Again I would stay away from the standard engine option.

Looks like you confirm with what I said cr0ck1. You don't use power to pull a wakeboarder actually the opposite. Slow gradual pull (actually we have found for new boarders the slower the better during the getting up stage). Pulling a 220lb skier and I think the owner will wish he had a bigger engine.

newsearayselect200owner - do a sea trial and see if it will fit your needs. If you have a friend that is going to be skiing with you and he is experienced (meaning you are not going to have to teach him how to get up) take him with you on the sea trail. Take it for a test run and see if it is what you are looking for. The 200 Select is a beautiful boat, good luck with whatever you decide.

You will never regret having enough power. Another option to consider would be the Bravo 3 Drive. Dual props pull a lot better than one.

I have the 5.0 mpi with a high five prop on my 200 select, and it works fine even when loaded up with 6 people, although I do find myself thinking how much better it would have been with the 5.7.

I cant really comment with any experience about the 4.3, so the only way to know would be to test one yourself under the conditions you will be using it, but my gut feeling is that whilst it would probably work (it will definately work if you use a small enough prop), you might always be thinking I should have gone for the bigger engine.

Heres some numbers for you to aid your descision (all at sea level), with 2 people on board my boat with the 21 pitch vengeance prop will do 48mph, this drops to 46mph with the 21pitch high five, and this drops to 43mph with 6 people on board using the 21 pitch high five.

I have the 2003 w/ 5.0L & Bravo 3 dual props and its great for watersports. The B-3 has great low end power pulling and tops out around 52-55mph (speedometer). Consider if you will have a full boat with fuel and coolers much of the time. Pulling a slalom skier is the heaviest load and mine pulls me (200 lbs) right up. You will also get bigger wakes with the heavier motor and drive which is a plus for wakeboarding.

If you can demo the 4.3 boat w/ your friends and a quick slalom run you could tell. IMHO for lots of watersports I'd go with the bigger motor and drive. For cruising you'll get better fuel economy w/ the 4.3.

My Unlce has the 185 with the 4.3. It's perfect for that boat I think. I think if your going to a 200 you may want the next size up because it's not just the weight of the boat but it's bigger and it sounds like you have friends you may want to bring along, along with bag, suncreen, cooler....yada....yada....yada. I 4.3 in the 200o will get you moving but I'm echoing you may want to bump up to a 5.0L so you're not disappointed. Nothing worse than paying a tone of $$$$ and not being satisfied or wondering.
Best of luck
