270 SLX - Pre-purchase Questions

Forum,

I am looking at a beautiful 270 SLX. The boat has the 496 Magnimum and is in excellent visual condition.

Are there any "known issues" with these boats? I read somewhere that some of the SLX's have had their motors replaced under warranty? I thought I read about potential hull issues? Has anyone else heard of these issues?

I'm definitely going to get a survey.

Here are some pics of the boat. What do you guys think?

One of the sales guys at work just sold his '06 in favor of a cruiser. It was a beautiful boat with many cool features that contribute to ease of ownership. The only bitches I heard from him were; 1- The gelgloss was prone to chipping in certain areas and S/R wouldn't cover it under warranty when it was new, 2- The girls complained that it was awkward to use the head, 3- two of the drain cocks where ultra hard to access during the winterizing procedure and probably needed a specialty tool (I think Dennis has a post regarding mods to a deep socket to overcome this problem), 3 1/2- If you're in a hurry to get somewhere it costs a heck of a lot of money for gas!!!! Other than those minor issues Steve said it was an excellent boat and it sold to the first person who looked at it. Survey is a must IMHO. Good luck and all the best.

Gorgeous boat. The 270 is on my list if/when i every upgrade. Try a forum and Google search on the 496/Fuel Cooler issues and 496 aluminum exhaust manifolds. I believe there is also a 250/270 SLX thread. If you have full records, you can see when/if these items have been replaced or required replacing. If you have the engine and drive surveyed by a MerCruiser trained tech., he will be able to give you an opinion on the overall condition of the drive system, which would also include bellows condition, compression & etc.

Good luck.

I hope that is not the one from Orange Beach, AL that was run over the rocks near Ono Island. The owner is from Texas Hull was split and repaired.

They are an awesome boat. Although we had the 250 SLX with the 496 which we really loved !!! I can see the one you are considering has the Capt's call exhaust.... instant testosterone booster. My condo neighbor sold me the 2007 250 SLX so he could buy a 2006 270 SLX that he originally wanted.

A big difference between a 2006 and a 2007 or newer is that the DTS throttle control is digital on the 2007 and up. It's mechanical on the 2006.

The 270 SLX has a much higher freeboard than the 250SLX and would be really great as an offshore boat. We are on a large lake.

As for the use of the head in the step down area...... I NEVER used ours.... would only tell guest about having one, once we were back at our dock. I'd just tell folks to go take a swim.

I see this one you are looking at has a frig. Mine didn't, and I would think as a "day" boat, that it would take more time to cool down than it's worth fooling with. We just used a cooler. In that same spot, was a under counter storage locker that I kept boat fenders in.

Good luck, and I would urge you to consider getting a survey. The 496 is a really strong engine. I had the Bravo III drive. I don't know of any hull issues except that some folks say they have water in the in floor storage lock

How big of a deal do you think that is? Does it make a huge difference? Should it be a deal breaker?

Another question:

I'll be running this boat in saltwater. I know it has closed cooling, but doesn't it still take in water? Do you still need to flush it out after each use like I did on my other boats?

Is there a hose fitting on the motor or anything? Or do you use the flush muffs?

The DTS is a great feature from a drivers perspective. But, it is one more electronic item to fail. My 270 has DTS.

For saltwater you absolutely need to flush. Merc has a flush kit that puts a T in the lower line and brings a hose up to the top of the engine compartment. You run it while connected to the garden hose on high pressure. Will work even if the boat is floating in the water. The heat exchanger and riser/ manifolds will last much longer if you flush. A salty boater will need to tell you how long life is if you don't - I am fresh water.

The cool fuel unit, heat exchanger, and exhaust manifolds are all raw water cooled. So, yes you will need to flush the engine for 5 - 10 minutes or long enough to get the engine to normal operating temperature plus a few minutes. Some use Saltaway flushing solution. I use quicksilver muffs as they will not slip off the drive.

Has anyone had a curtain enclosure made that attaches the arch to the windshield on the boat?

I would not consider it a deal breaker, but if I had the choice of 2 nice boats, one a 2006, and one a 2007 with DTS it would be an easy decision. My condo neighbor who sold us the 250 SLX with DTS missed it on the 2006 he bought and inquired about switching it out to having DTS on his 2006. At the time, back in 2010 the Sea Ray dealer said it was over $5k...... he left it alone with the mechanical.

As for flushing out the outdrive after being in saltwater, DEFINATELY do so, either with muffs, or the flushing kit that is available, if not already installed.

I think DTS is tied to the power plant more so than the model year. My 05 sun deck with a 496 is DTS.
