Since it's a pretty common concern--that some earlier versions of the 240 Sundeck and other models have a helm which is specifically designed to house the old oval shaped Clarion M301 remote, meaning any stereo upgrade creates a remote fit/compatibility headache--I figured I'd share my simple solution.

Like so many, I easily swapped out the head unit with a Fusion MS-RA70, which is so much more user-friendly with considerably better sound quality.

Then, for the remote, I was hopeful, based on product literature review regarding the dimensions, that the compatible Fusion ARX70 wireless remote would fit within the oval impression in the helm after removing the Clarion remote. Unfortunately, the Fusion remote was slightly larger, so my original plan didn't work. I hated the idea of cutting a bigger hole in the helm, because it would have been an awkward larger circle within an oval, and there may have been holes, unevenness, etc.--just would have been awkward.

So, I decided to simply stick the Fusion remote on top of the Clarion remote, paired it with the new head unit, and it worked perfectly without having to run any wires.

However, I wasn't thrilled, that the old dummy Clarion remote was still visible, and it generally drives me crazy to have buttons that don't go to anything. So, I disassembled the Clarion remote, removed the button pad, filled in with a sheet of plastic (actually used the black plastic that wrapped around the old Clarion head unit), then spray-painted the whole thing back to match, and placed it back in the helm. Then, I stuck the Fusion remote back on top.

Not a perfect solution by any means, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out. I still may get brave and carve-out a custom footprint in the helm. Or, I may explore filling the hole with a power port or something else and sticking the Fusion remote elsewhere. But until-then, I'm pleased with the way this looks.

Sorry to keep touting such a simple project, but I just couldn't seem to stop obsessing over finding a perfect solution to the old Clarion oval remote dilemma ... so, I scrapped my previous project, and ordered a small acrylic sheet with rounded edges and corners from Boat Outfitters to cover the hole. Slapped the Fusion remote on it, and I am FINALLY satisfied. So hard to believe I lost so much sleep over this project when the solution was so simple. Only sharing because I know this has been an issue for so many other people. I even attached an additional Fusion remote to the transom in less than 30 seconds! Where have these wireless gems been all my life???

Just being honest here... I really like the pic below... couldn’t they cut the plexi to that oval shape?.... you could have sold those...... either way you are good...awesome job

Looks great! I am going to be replacing my radio with the fusion in the next couple weeks. The hole from the old XMD3 is significantly bigger than the RA70 so I have to replace the starboard piece before I can mount the unit.

Do you have any lessons learned that you could share on the install and connection of the ARX70's? Also does the transom ARX70 connect well? That looks pretty slick.

Yes! You will be pleased to know that there is ZERO effort in installing the ARX70 remotes. 100% wireless, and they connect to the RA70 via Bluetooth. Simply peel and stick the remotes to the boat, and they’re only $50 each! One piece of advice I have regarding the RA70 mounting into the larger Clarion hole, I ended up buying a plastic adapter plate I found on Amazon: Fusion MS-CLADAP Adaptor Plate for 600 and 700 Series Stereo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AJVI7CI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zfV2EbG93HTW2.

Here’s a photo of the install.

Thanks! I ordered the adapter, that way I can get the radio in now:)

I really like your shelf, think I might build one for my boat. Would be nice to have a place to put phones and other stuff.

Thinking of putting same unit in my 98 290 sundancer. Does it have a aux port to connect a i-pod? Was it a easy swap out?

Inspired by your post we’ve done about the same on our ‘07 Sundeck.
We added a usb extension to plug into the Fusion and the volt meter reads off our main battery.

For those that have made the switch to the Fusion RA70 from the Clarion XMD3....can you tell a difference in sound quality?

I added a new amp and fixed my Clarion based system but the fronts running off the headunit sound a little thin while the rears and sub seem to be a little thick. If you know what a mean...

I'm switching out the original 6.5's tomorrow to new Kicker speakers. Curious to see how it all sounds now and if I will want to switch to the Fusion just because.

I just did mine on my 98 290 dancer. Ra70 and Added 4 wireless remoted, a i pod line and a usb extension cable. Sounds awesome and much better then the old clarian. Kept the old 30 watt 2 channel amp. Awesome to have the bluetooth remotes. Can set them up to do zones. So if im outside it only turns up or down the volume outside and does not blast the cabin
