2002 Mercury 5.0 Bravo III No Forward or Reverse

Hi all,

I’ve got a 2002 Sea Ray 240 SunDeck with 240 hours.

I decelerated from 24 mph going into a no wake area and lost all power in the stern drive. I can hear spinning in the lower unit but nothing is engaging and no prop movement forward or reverse. Seems strange everything was working with no issues before this happened. I pulled the lower unit off this morning and the shift cable seems to be moving fine. Clutch cone? Any ideas?

Could be but sounds more like the coupler. When you rotate the input shaft is the prop shaft moving ? Look at the coupler splines with a flashlight. Usually the clutch goes out slowly

Did you have your drive off and serviced ? How are your mounts ? Have your stringers gone rotten ? Something is very wrong with a coupler going with those kind of hours. Your alignment is off for one reason or another and if a service person or marina is the reason because they failed to align properly they should be the ones to cover the costs the motor needs to be pulled to do the work required and 2.5 boat bucks is an estimate of the costs parts and labour so I would do some investigating.

We’d purchased the boat last year from a private seller. Mounts look good and nothing appears to be rotten. I’ll know more when I have the motor out.

At that age you should consider replacing the starter and look for corrosion on the oil pan
