Hello everyone,

I have started a blog to chronicle the restoration of my 340 Sundancer. I would be interested in knowing what you think, and in any ideas you may have. Please see:

I hope it becomes helpful to other Sea Ray owners.

What a great blog! I admire craftsmanship and your work is really top shelf. Thanks for posting and I'm looking forward to progress updates!

Very nice work.

I don't know anyone named Alex D. This boat does have a complete arch. I am, however, missing the engine room hatch. Does Alex want to sell his?

Thanks to everyone for the support.

"Alex D" is a member here on CSR - the dock fell on his 2002 - 340 Sea Ray and the arch was busted - because the arch couldn't be replaced the insurance company totaled the boat - he has been selling some parts for his old boat on CSR. Canvas and the such. His boat had 8.1 liter engines. He kept the boat in VA. His profile - maybe share the VIN and see if it is his old boat:

What a pleasure it must be, to take this on in your shop!

I am looking forward to being able to watch.

Thanks for posting this. :smt038

Looks great!

You've inspired me... I'm in the very early stages of starting the long process of restoring/remodeling mine.

Just created a blog to chronicle it. Hopefully my blog will start to look more like yours in the next few weeks.:smt001

Good luck with the restoration.

Bill,

I am restoring this boat.....because I own it. It was a very good deal (at least, it seemed that way at the time...), since it had no engines, generator or engine room hatch. It originally has 6.2 Mercs in it, but I would not put those back in it. I am now torn between Crusader 8.1's, or the new Merc 8.2's. What does everyone think?

On one hand, the Crusaders have a good reputation, easier to service water pumps, and iron heads.

The 8.2's are possibly more efficient, have larger bores with shorter strokes (resulting in a better rod/stroke ratio and reduced cylinder bore thrust loading), and aluminum heads for weight savings. (but the Mercs are a new, unproven design, and the aluminum scares me a bit, in terms of longevity).

Maybe this should be a new thread?

Why not look for two used 300hp 6 clyinder Yanmars. and one used diesel generator. That would make the dream 2002 340.

Are you sure that the 8.2's have aluminum heads ? I hoped that Mercruiser would have learned a lesson from the 8.1 fiasco from 01 to 03.

I'd go Crusader personally. Either that or Volvo. Volvo would be my first choice.
