Hi Guys,

My first post so be gentle with me!!

My Wife and I are leaning towards buying a 2001 SR 460, Cummins, etc.
The boat is in Florida and has been sitting- I’m concerned about the fuel tank - anyone ever removed one ??

There are many other issues with this boat and I personally have not laid eyes on it - but tank replacement has me concerned.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Steve

If it's a concern ..... as part of the survey before you buy have the tank scoped so you can see if it's corroded, sludged or alive with algae.

I take it this boat does not currently run.

You don’t have to remove the tank to have it cleaned.

There are no known problems with Sea Ray tanks, certainly no more so than any other diesel boat with aluminum fuel tanks. Tanks are subject to neglect and poor fuel management practices. If the prior owner(s) have allowed water from bad fuel, tank condensation or rain or wash water entering the o-ring seal on the deck fitting, then any fuel tank will eventually corrode.

Cleaning the tank won't fix corrosion. Replacement is about a $20-$25K undertaking, so you need to fully investigate the health of the tanks before proceeding. A good first start is to go look at the boat first hand to determine if she is a possibility. If you can eliminate it based on your inspection then the fuel tanks become a non-issue.

A good first step in the tank thing is to check the Racor bowls to see if they contain any water.

Thanks fwebster - I’m no expert, but that’s my concern - I’m going to be in the area in Nov and if it’s still there I’ll take a look at it- I really don’t want to buy a turd

And the boat is supposed to fire right up and run great - maybe they did treat the fuel ?? Maybe it’s ok ??
After I go and look at it and had some interest I would definitely have a Pro check in out

I own a 460 sundancer and am familiar with almost all the systems. Frank is correct in his comments but unless you have some other information I wouldn’t think the tank needs replaced. If it does need replaced it’s the labor that will eat you alive because the engines/transmissions have to be removed. That requires the cockpit to be disassembled.

If you’re just shopping for a 460 in general, I suggest we talk on the phone a little and let me provide some insight.

That would be great-we’re ready to buy something in that 45-50 range ??
We stayed last spring on a 2002 SR 48 MY - the kind of ugly tennis shoe boat . But after living on it , I thought it was a
very nice functional boat .
I don’t want a bridge- I’m more of a express guy - we’re going Thursday to look at a very nice 01 46 - probably more than I want to spend- we’ll see

I bought a 2002 460 7 years ago that had been sitting on a berth for 4 years.

Apart from batteries, (which was expected), the boat has given no particular issues that might be attributed to years of not being used, so I suspect a complete and thorough survey is all you need.

The only fuel tank problem I have ever had was a cracked pick-up tube in the port tank. I contacted the manufacturer, Florida Marine Tanks and they were most helpful. Their repair item fixed the problem immediately and was inexpensive.

Over ten years of ownership and we still love the boat. You really can't go wrong with a 460DA if you do your homework. Be prepared to spend a bit more for a good one with all the maintenance records. We have a number of owners on this forum who can help with your questions.

sorry to change but i am looking at 02 460 hardtop with cumming any thing special i should look at have 00 340 now looking to go bigger thanks

Thanks fo all the info - I’m going to go and look a nice 01 today- the one I’m referring to is in Florida and we’re going to look at that one in November . That one is a lot cheaper but probably a bottomless pit of trouble !!

You guys need to search for the 460 owners group thread on this forum. There is tons of information in that thread. If you need help on specifics or want me to help look over a potential boat it’s much easier if you pm me the information and we can chat on the phone.

Capt. Sandbar, just be aware of the price changes from a Florida boat to a Great Lakes Freshwater boat to a West Coast boat. All of these factors change the price significantly. The 460 is a great boat as mentioned by many. You just need to find the right one!
