I have a 2000 sundeck 210 that until yesterday ran like a top. Took it out for the first time of the season yesterday and cruised around a bit and came to a stop to check for any leaking on the engine bay since I changed out my drain plugs this past winter. Seconds after I opened the hatch while the engine was idling the engine just died. I tried turning over engine a few times immediately with no success. After sending out a few SOS texts I tried to start her up and she started right up. She ran great all the way back to the inlet (20 minutes at about 3000 rpm) until I put her in neutral to wait for some kayaks to go by. Then it died again. After that she started one more time but died once more (almost to slip ) wont start at all. There is plenty of gas in the tank and the warning beep comes on when you turn the key. My first thought is the fuel pump but really would like some direction on what to try before I go tearing into that. Any help is appreciated.

Rob, I have the same boat and I wish I had some kind of an answer for you but I don't know. I'll be following to see what the answer is.

Other things to check:

  • Oil pressure switch, but they usually just die and are not intermittent. But basically shut down the fuel pump if low or no oil pressure is detected. A basic test is if you hear the fuel pump run when the key is switched on.
  • Is this an Alpha I ? If not disregard. If so, it could be the shift interrupt switch. This momentarily kills the ignition when shifting between N-F-R. The first symptom is engine dying when shifting, it's possible for the switch to produce intermittent problems. The switch is a little plunger on the lower shift cable plate - they can get gummed up and not work correctly.

It is efi. I have ruled out the fuel pump because when I take off the metal housing off of the throttle body it's spraying gas. So I checked the wire off the coil pack and it broke off. Upon inspection it's burnt. Inside the ignition coil is charred. Hopefully it's this. Any tips on how to test the coil?

I would clean up the coil where the wire connects, and get a new set of wires - if the coil wire is that bad and they have never been replaced, there are probably issues with some of the other wires. Distributor cap and rotor might be in order also. Could be a problem with the coil, but the wire sounds more like the problem at this point.

Agreed, if I found that I would replace the coil, distributor cap, wires and plugs. That coil is a bitch to get out. Do yourself a favor and remove the seat base, the risers and manifolds. Once those are out of the way you can have the rest done in an hour or less. When you go to put the manifolds on get two bolts that are a little longer than the manifold bolts. the cut the heads of the bolts off and cut a slit in it. Next tread the bolts into the outer most bolt holes and slide on your new gasket. Then slide the manifold on and start the other two bolts. Once you get them hand tight use a screw drive and remove your guide bolts and now your home free.

That is a great tip on reinstalling the manifolds. Would of been handy when I reinstalled the starboard manifold I had to remove to replace the starter.

I ordered a new coil and got a new coil to distributor wire from my local marine guy (great guy) who happen to have one laying around when I went to his shop prepared to buy a whole wire set. I'm going to replace the coil and install the wire and take it from there. All the other wires look like they are in great shape, even the plug wire that was burnt looks good on the distributor end. To be honest I'm not pulling the manifolds unless I have to.

Any tips on replacing the coil other than laying on the motor and slinking behind it like an awkward fool lol?

Rob Q how bad was the starter replacement? It looks like it's time for me to replace mine.

After you take off the seat support and remove the manifold, not that bad. Trying to reinstall the manifold while keeping the new gasket in place was the biggest pain. So with your headless bolt trick it shouldn't be that bad.

So guys. It ended up being the engine coil. Funny thing is I replaced the coil with some bullshit one I found off the internet but it didn't work so I conceded and took it in to the shop. They put an OEM one in and it's ran like it's usual smooth self for 6 hours now. Thanks for all the input fellas
