2000 7.4 Horizon plugs

10-40 too thin for my liking unless you live in alaska. Is that what you've been using?
I been using straight 40 because that was recommended in 91. Didn’t know if I should change being technology has advanced.
Don’t fix what ain’t broke, right? Guess I’ll stay with 40W.

Be diligent about the oil you choose to use, as the older engines with flat tappet cams (like my GenV 7.4) need the zinc content found in most racing / off road oils like the VR1.

I haven't used a 50 wt oil in any engine (except my old 426 Hemi and my Harley) and am a tad concerned about excessive pressure / low flow when cold.

If too thick on an engine with good tolerances on bearings, I would be concerned about lack of volume / flow on a cold start. I would rather have a little lower pressure with better volume / flow and still maintain a good pressure at idle on a warmed up engine. Trial and error, I suppose.

The newer engines, like Vortec's, that have roller cams like the newer style oils better.

Ya, I read about the flat tappet cams.
Advance showing 40W in stock, Fram & Valvoline. Will stop by tomorrow.
