2000 410 EXPRESS (gas) Question !!!!

Thanks LG111 and Roller, you've made me hit the watch thread button. I am enjoying reading your experiences and learning. I have the 380hp 7.4's and sounds like I am running them just like Roller is running his with the same results. I could get on plane without tabs if I wanted to, but it just seems (feels) easier on the throttles and boat using them. I am so impressed with how my 400 is all around compared to the 310 I had. I don't have the fuel meters yet, but doing the math I'm getting between 7.4 and 7.7 mpg. I usually cruise around 3400 rpm.

Hmm what are you doing to get 7.4 and 7.7 MPG? Don't think my 185 bowrider even got that lol. I'm guessing that was supposed to be .74 and .77.

I know this is off subject but I think it'll help. I’ve had the chance to meet Roller and (Joe) maybe had a few drinks with him.. He's a good dude. He may come across as a know it all to some on this forum but that's certainly not his intentions or how he is. He comes from the angle of his own experience that he's had and he wants to help others using those experiences. I find guys like that to be invaluable.
Thx Roller!

(BTW: isn't your gasser getting .50-.60 MPG or something like that..:D)

Thanks Great Lakes! You know what happens when two personalities are the same... Sharing backgrounds always helps cut the ice. All good. I love to share my experiences as I have a rich history of boating and it's rare to find others what grew up in such a blessed background. I find many boaters worry to much about the boat buck. Obviously it's important to budget but if you own a boat then be ready for a few big hits to the wallet!!!! I look at as buying memories. Think about how many boating stories end in disaster and we lived! And the stories are always better at cocktail time on the dock.

I should clarify that my SmartCraft is the new vessel view bluetooth pulling data from the plug and play smartcraft harness. I only get one mpg decimal which drives me nuts. I wrote to mercury twice to up date their app to two but no answer as of yet.

I couldn't imagine having the water tank in back. When my water is near empty the bow rise is nuts. And my fuel burn is slight less due to the a$$ drag. 831 lbs of water up front makes for a very enjoyable solid ride.
I have been thinking of adding 250feet of chain vs chain/rope. That extra wieght probably would keep the bow down enough so I could sit at the helm while getting on plane vs standing.

Has anyone added chain and measured how much lower the bow sits and how much the stern lifted while at the dock?

Great Lakes is a good guy. Notice how he said, "maybe had a few drinks" and not "he came aboard empty-handed and sucked down several of my beers"? :D

I was probably on Garmin's "ignore" list by the time I was done submitting feature requests for 2-decimal economy readout. I upgraded MFD's and the first firmware update I applied added it. I wasn't even expecting it. That was a good day!! As far as I know, they never released an update for the older units.

IMO, a gasser 400DA has 2 stand-out handling issues: she won't back-up an extended distance in wind or current without the bow weather-vaning, and she's light enough in the stern to ventilate the props in heavy seas.

The aft water tank probably has little impact, or a negative impact on item 1, but can really help item 2.

It's a particularly an issue for me in Lake Erie, known for steep waves with a brutal frequency. Nothing ruins my day like hearing my props spin in the air!

Wow, I have never had my props catch air regardless of wave height or frequency. Foward or backward. Curious what the hull differences are between 400 and 410...

I haven't experienced that either. I have heard the horror stories about Lake Erie though. I have been lucky with all my crossings so far.

It’s probably more about this mean-a$$ Lake and her infamous attitude than the 400’s hull. She’s a little kicked-up today in-fact. I wanted to go to the island, but I doubt even the ferries will keep their schedule.

TONIGHT Northwest winds to 30 knots diminishing to 15 to 25 knots. Rain showers likely early, then a chance of rain showers late in the evening. Waves 3 to 6 feet building to 5 to 8 feet. Waves occasionally around 10 feet.

I can confirm the ventilation on my 400 as well. It happened to me several times crossing Lake Michigan this past June. In 3-4' seas I would spin the props at anything faster than 13/14kts on the backsides of the waves (taking them on the bow). It was easily manageable but something I had never experienced with my 340...

It sucks! My 330DA would do it. Gas 390EC’s are prone to it too. Short-freq waves are brutal. The aft water tank can help, but that’s another shortfall of the 400- these “L” shaped tanks are prone to cracking at the top, so I only fill my tank to 3/4ths.
