I am in the process of purchasing a 2000 380DA. The current owner says depth finder does not work. Is the transducer a through hull design? If we determine that the transducer is bad, I want to have it repaired when we pull it for the survey.

At 18 years old, we'd only be guessing. But originally, yes, thru-hull. However, any even-somewhat competent mechanic (who would be doing the repair) can figure that out in a matter of seconds. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about knowing this in advance - it doesn't really change anything from your end.

It more of a timing thing... We have a 200 mile run up river as soon as we close. Just want to have it repaired in time for the trip. And, if it is thru hull, then I can have them replace while the boat is our for the survey.

All I really meant is that you can save your time trying to figuring this out on your own. The shop is going to want to take a look at things and diagnose for themselves. They'll either have a transducer in stock (if that turns out to be the problem and the new transducer will speak to the old electronics) or can get it in a day or two. Have the shop, if possible, look at it ahead of time - if you can.

You probably know this, but keep in mind that a depthfinder only shows you where you've BEEN, not what's ahead of you (barring forward looking sonar, of course). Of course, you can use it to track patterns and compare to charts, but don't rely solely (blindly) on the depthfinder.

Regardless, good luck with the purchase - those 380's are very nice!
