Purchased 2000 380DA in St Petersburg, FL from the original owner. He purchased it at Marine Max in Clearwater and had it maintained at MarineMax in St Pete through 2019.
Having it hauled north to North East, MD this week.
Will be on the hard until the long list of repairs is taken care of.
Attached is the engine/transmission survey, along with the oil analysis. Waited to pull the trigger on the purchase, until the oil analysis came back.
The port engine is a CAT reman installed in 2017. Replaced port transmission in 2019.
Starboard engine is original with approx 1100 hours. Hour meter shows just over 100 hours. Waiting on maintenance records from MarineMax. Not sure why they replaced the starboard meter at same time as port was replaced.
The plan is to fix the shaft seals, do fluid changes, belts, hoses, clean up corrosion and other general maintenance. Then float and run locally for the summer.
Come fall, pull both engines and send at least the starboard engine to T&S Marine in Crisfield MD to refurbish. Then clean up and paint the engine bay.

Thoughts on the survey?

I would ay this is typical of the boat and year. Bottom line is you have LOT of work to do to bring it up to a decent baseline, but most is clean and repair. Normal for a 20+ year old boat. However, without pictures, its hard to tell how much really needs to happen. This is talking about the major mechanical parts...there is a lot more to these boats.

Per the CAT SOS, both transmissions have been replaced with ZF85's HUGE ++++ (if both were actually replaced). Verify.

The elephant in the room is what caused the port engine to fail, and is the same about to happen to the starboard?? Its a $30K project minimum.

They are both ZF85s (pictures attached).
Yes there's a lot to do but as I come up to speed, I'll do 90% of it.
Most of the small stuff is going to get replaced, starting with the most critical.

Catching up on the NEGLECT and the DEFERRED MAINTENANCE is the issue here.

These boats (not exclusive to Sea Ray) become older and the inattention of the owner to those necessary maintenance issues creates costly long term problems.

Lots of us here on the FORUM are going through this same process of restoring the boat to her baseline in terms of both catch-up maintenance and preventative maintenance - they're not the same thing.

Suggest you service all coolers and heat exchanger and replace the transmission coolers with new.

IMHO at this age those transmission coolers are a ticking time bomb.

I am a fan of fresh water flushing and will plumb and begin that process after installing my own serviced coolers.

BEST !

It always amazes me, we buy 15-25 year old boats, but expect it be be like new. Why do we not have those same expectations when looking at cars or trucks of the same vintage. This is a perfect example, Cat gave green checks on engines and transmissions, all systems seem to work. Engines need cleaning and painting, big deal, not required to be a good boat. If you want them painted, paint them. If a transmission gets rebuilt or replaced on a car, no big deal, we don't wonder why, it just went bad. Sorry to be an ass, but this does drive me nuts. Want new, buy new.

Read your post and "WTF is he ranting about?" came to mind. Perhaps my question "Thoughts on the survey?" wasn't clear enough.
Totally get the 20 year old boat comment. Have a fair amount of refurbish experience with planes, cars, motorcycles and boats of the same vintage or older.
What I was looking for were technical comments from 3116 & ZF85 owners. Maybe A Dancer responded accordingly.
Not sure how you divined one would "expect it to be like new" from my post. Actually, my expectation is just the opposite, every system is assumed to be broken until proven otherwise.

Thanks for the input. Not familiar with the 3116 & ZF85 setup. I see a heat exchanger (141-4873) and the cooler bolted to the side of the engine. Boat still isn't in MD so other than a cursory look-see, haven't gotten into the guts of the engine bay.
I'm assuming I'll remove both of those and have them inspected and cleaned. Is there a separate transmission cooler?

Sounds like you're up for the challenge. As a side note, I had a 2001 380DA w/3126's shipped from FL to MD about 12 years ago and owned it for 4 years. We're not far from you on the Bohemia River so reach out if you have any questions when you get it here.

Thanks. I looked into a slip there when I purchased the Beneteau 361 a few years back. It's about the same distance/time from home to North East. May switch in the future, now that I'm going back to a power boat.

Do have a question about a diesel mechanic. Was given the name of Chris Jones (lives in Chesapeake City). Are you familiar with him? Any other suggestions?

I do not have experience with Chris but have heard his name a few times lately and all have been positive. I'd give him a call as my mechanic is extremely backed up.

First of all, I apologized for being an ass in the original statement. I never said he was ranting. If anyone was ranting it was me.
