Hey family i have a question about the battery set-up on the boat... the last few weeks of the boating season here in MI i had a problem starting the starboard motor had to use the emergency start to get it started... one issue is that the boat was plugged in to shore power so I'm assuming the battery is not charging.... my question is i have 4 batteries down there just wondering which ones go where... i.e. port motor, starboard motor, house, and gen...looking to replace starboard battery...

you could just trace the red positive cable from the starter on the starboard engine back to one of the batteries to be sure....

my starboard engine starts from a two battery bank that also serves as the house battery.....

Mine are setup as two port batteries together parallel as house and port engine, then starboard engine and gen each on their own with a 3 bank charger to charge all. I just replaced all 4 batteries with new agm's last weekend due to the same problem with starboard battery last you that you are having. Trying to decide if I should upgrade my charger now to a more modern one

double check all connections to insure they are tight and insure you did not accidentally install one or more of the batteries incorrectly (red wire pos and black wire neg)....

I don't have the monitor so I am unfamiliar with how it is wired, but i'll look through my owner's manual to see if I can come up with anything....

my manual says the alarm will sound until the engines are started due to low oil pressure....does your alarm stop when you start the engines?....the manual also states the monitor is protected by a 5 amp fuse installed in the circuit breaker on the main DC breaker panel....

the main DC breaker panel is located in the engine room...there should be a circuit breaker labeled 'Systems Monitor' in that panel...

The alarms do not go off whether the engines are running or not the monitor panel monitors water in the hull ,generator shut down ,oil pressure, engine temperature it's in the shape of a boat with red lights indicating what it's monitoring and they're all lit up and the alarm is squealing the only time I got it to shut off as when I disconnected the starboard battery cuz I went ahead and changed it to but as soon as I hooked it back up it started again

My two cents Gasman - replace 'em all at the same time. Or at least the three running the show (excluding your generator). On my rig there are two batteries between the motors and one behind them in the middle. None of these locations are particularly enjoyable to access. Particularly the two in the middle of the motors. Save yourself the misery of doing it on two days and just go for all three!

My two cents only of course. And FWIW the Duracell batteries they sell at Batteries Plus around our parts are hard to beat for the quality/price (they are Deka batteries). I put four group 27's in my 340 last year...

Thanks for the help I have decided to replace the batteries... looking online the boat is calling for group 31 800 cca 200 reserve the cheapest I found was 300 bucks each for agm.... so I may just do the 2 for the starboard side for now.... do u guys have any recommendations for cheaper batteries.... from what I have read the agm gives the best bang for the buck

I have the same set up as you and as stated; "the 2 port are in set in a parallel connection" (house & port engine..these should be deep cycle with high amp-hours). "the 2 starboard are individual -1 generator -1 starboard engine" (you want higher CCA (cold cranking amps) for these 2. The charger should have 3 output cables (1 for the port combo & 1 for the starboard & 1 for the generator (if you have one)). If you change to AGM, the charger will have to be set to AGM as well. If currently not charging -Check the charger, the light should be on and there should be a meter for output volts (around 14v).

I haven't read anything that says AGM is the best "bang for your buck" in all cases. Quite the opposite for some of us.

There are some really good threads on this site about the types of batteries out there. If money is no object, get the AGM's but make sure your charger will not fry them. If you want this investment to make fiscal sense you need to consider how you actually use them.

I ended up with Group 27 lead acid batteries. Our boats were sold with Group 27. 31's aren't that much more money but handling them is only going to be harder (weight). 27's (in my case) will run the entire boat for a weekend without any trouble. I also had some question over whether or not all group 31's have exactly the same post spacing as 27's. My boat has exactly ZERO extra battery cable on the center batteries. Any change in the post location would have required wiring work. I had zero interest in that.

$90 a piece with the 10% online discount. The way I use my boat AGM's couldn't compete with this deal. Not even close. But those Optima blue tops would have definitely looked better in my bilge, I will give you that much.

I don't think that you should mix 2 AGM with 2 standard. I know the charger has to be set for one way or the other, it could cause issues..

The only difference between the "groups 27 & 31" are the physical size. Both will fit in the trays, 31'are a little bigger. AH Amp Hours (deep cycle) and CCA (cold cranking amps) are what you should be concerned with. AGM's are maintenance free and are safer.
