2 Engines in 2 years (ouch)

I own a 1995 220 Over Nighter with a 5.7 ltr mercruiser. After 1100 hours the original engine was tired and I replaced it with a completely rebuilt 5.7 Mercruiser short block back in 2006. This past Summer (while on my boating vacation) the oil line to the factory mercruiser remote oil filter simply "popped off" and as soon as the alarm sounded we shut down the engine but it was too late. The engine still had a quart and a half left in it and only ran for maybe 30 seconds before we discovered the problem. Almost every Mercruiser 5.7 ltr has the same remote oil filter. There are two oil lines running to it (send/return) factory crimped with brass fittings. DON'T TRUST THEM. I now have replaced mine with hydrolic lines and I am still keeping my fingers crossed. After the disaster happened I pushed the hose over the old fitting and then tried to take it off by hand while the engine was cold and this was next to impossible. The point here is even if you try testing your own it will appear that all is well until the hose heats up under pressure. If your boat is more than 10 years old it may be a wise decision to replace it before you end up like me-2 engines in 2 years (OUCH)!

Thanks for the advice. Found out over the week end my hoses are leaking on my 1998 270SE. Getting them replaced this week end.

My wife had an engine go out on a 1972 MG-B. Her father had the engine replaced in a small town out along a highway. A year later, an oil cooler line blew off and toasted the engine. The mechanic had re-used the old oil lines by re-crimping them to the oil cooler. Lesson learned, I guess. What an idiot.

Ive looked at the Merc setup.
The oil filter is upside down on top of the engine?

So everytime you change out the oil filter. Doesnt oil poor out of the filter on top of the engine every time you loosen the filter?

What we do to keep this from happening is punch a hole in the top of the filter with a screw driver while attached to the motor to release the pressure. The oil drains back into the motor. Let it drain and then remove the filter carefully with paper towels or shop rags handy to catch any drip.

Thanks,
Oil filter being upside down. Sucks not being able to prime the filter before an install.
I can already see future upgrades to my new repower that I have not even bought yet.
Oil fiter relocation kit.
