1999 Searay Sundancer 34

380hp Horizens
Hello all Sea Ray people,
great site. Looking at purchasing a Sundancer 340 1999, with twin 496 Mercruisers (450hrs) on shafts. Kohler 5kw generator (150 hours).

Any tips or things I should look out for?

If that boat has 496's it has been repowered, not necessarily a bad thing. What history can you get on the boat? Did they replace the transmissions as well? Is the 450 hrs. total time or time on this power train? I would make sure it is getting proper WOT (wide open throttle), the props would need to be atleast repitched or replaced, because of the engine change.
This is just to start with....

Just a couple of things I have seen since owning my 340, check carefully around all the hatches on the top deck for softness or a spungy spring in the top deck, this could mean water intrusion. The other thing would be to check the water heater, as many boats use engine cooling water to heat the water heater, they tend to rust out by the time they are 10 years old.

Mine has the 7.4's in it so I second the thought that there has been a repower. Check and see if the tranny;s were swapped as well, I found out that mine has a hurth on the port and a borg warner on the starboard. Not a big deal but explains why the engines are at two different heights. good luck, I love my 340.

Surprised that a boat only 10 years old has been repowered already.

Probably had water intrusion....

It would be good to know why it was repowered and then if the cause was corrected.

Hello Guys,
thanks for the great advice. As an update we have determined that the engines are the 7.4 Mag Horizens, with 4 blade props. The gen set is a 8kw Westerbek (sp?).

Walking on the foredeck, does result in some "springness" which I thought was just the result of a large space below without a bulk head under it. The head liner is not showing any evidence of a water leak and the seals look good on the hatches.

Can anyone point me to a site that shows the WOT and specs on the engines?

Again thank you for all the great advise.

You might get a bit of flex in the foredeck - depending on weight and such - but it should not be much. If excessive - I would suspect moisture intrusion.
