1999 270 sundancer purchase

I had a local upholstery shop do it for me. Now is a great time to get them done because those guys are not busy this time of the year, you'll get you a great price. They use the patterns from the old ones to make the new ones. Some of them were a challenge to get off, just work it slow and you won't break anything. The speakers were replaced with the same size as what is there. There was an amp with the radio, I removed it and the CD changer. Look on Amazon for good buys on marine radios. My kids wanted the USB inputs. We replaced the remote too. Send me an e-mail address and I can send you of some before and after pics.

I would really appreciate that My email is xplicitlnck@aol.com. I sea trailed the boat today and everything went grEat. The only problem was the sensors for the tilt and trim. They didn't work. So I'm in the middle of trying to get the seller to fix befor I buy. I hear that's quiet the project to replace. Other than that I'm very happy. Do you know what size speakers are in there so Can order them. and how did you route the wire for the remote from the radio to the cockpit?

It is actually very easy to thread wires on this boat but it is tough to describe in words. I plan on taking pictures when I replace my stereo in the above thread. The pictures and descriptions should help you a good deal. I do not plan on doing this though until feburary though since the radio I will be using has a mid january release date. As far as reusing the remote at the helm you can move up to one new generation of calrion radio than what came with your boat but the current models will not work. If it were me I would opt for a remote that has an LCD readout to make it more user friendly. There are plenty of radio options. I am planning on using this one:

I have a 98 270DA and love it. There are a few things that you will need to constantly monitor. One thing is the Bravo3 out drive, it's a good design with one exception if the Mercathode fails or the sacrificial anodes are not correct the outdrive can corrode and fail within one season if the boat is keep in a wet slip. There's a ton of info on the internet concerning this, you should familiarize yourself with it. Have the Mercathode tested on a regular basis or is you are a DIYer but the test probe and check it yourself regularly. The 7.4 motor is a workhorse however if the exhaust manifold or riser begin to leak internally (and they will eventually) it diverts a small amount of water back into the head you can destroy the motor. To avoid this you must replace the manifold/riser on a regular basis if your keep your boat in salt water, not nearly as often if in freshwater.

Thanks for the info on the mercathode or however u spell it. Always wondered how you would test them and I didn't really understand what you wrote about the probe and testing it myself?? How often do you think the risers and manifolds would have to be changed. There's really no way to test them correct? And as for the thread for 270das there is one just have to go back a couple pages I think it's under late 90's 270. And by the way thanks for the pics of your dash it looks great how much were the dash trims if u don't mind me asking

Here's a link for testing the Mercathode system. http://www.mercstuff.com/mercathodetest.htm Early on in the season I had a gut feeling mine was not working. I had it tested and I was right it was kaput. Luckily I caught it in time but I already have some minor pitting in the aluminum around the prop bearing housing. I will be buying a test probe before the beginning of the 2012 season, learn how to use it and test it at least once a month. The biggest problem seems to be stray voltage from improperly wired boats while at the dock. I've had a couple of conversations with Merc. support and I've heard more the once that the only way to keep these things from dissolving like an Alka Seltzer is to maintain your Mercathode & anodes. They made a believer out of me.
My personal opinion concerning the exhaust/risers is replace them at around 4 to 5 years if you are in saltwater. If you see them leaking externally at the joint change them asap because they are leaking inside too. I've done some homework on non Mercruiser exhaust/risers, although they are quite a bit cheaper, they are inferior Chinese cast iron that will rust much quicker than genuine Merc. As a side note I installed the Volvo Neutra-Salt system http://www.volvopentastore.com/QL-Neutra-Salt-Engine-Flushing-Kit/dm/store_id.366--view_id.352393 on my boat. Before I shut here down for the day inject Neutra Salt into the raw water with the push of a button this chemically neutralizes the salt slowing down the corrosion process. I bought the Neutra-Salt sys from Boat Bandits for $140 on Long Island, your neck of the woods.
If you are referring to the dash write up that I posted I paid $40 for the carbon fiber vinyl covering I purchased it from Beacon Graphics in Lebanon, New Jersey. Came out real nice and easy to apply. There are people out there that can restore your dash for around $400 I got tired of spending money like a drunken sailor on leave and did it myself for a lot cheaper.

Thanks for the price response that sounds reasonable I guess lol. And to the other response thank you for the in depth answer really explained that one good I will check the mercathode as soon as I start up for the season and as for the risers and manifolds the owner that I bought it from showed me a bill for the replacment of both of them last winter but I did notice a little rust on the port side were the manifold meets the riser on the outside forward bolt... The surveyor told me it is just sweat and there known to do it to just sand it down and paint it... It's not much just surface rust but that's to my untrained eye. Any opinions on that.
