I am currently in the process of buying a 99 270 da and just wanted some reviews from people who have owned them. I put a deposit down so I can wait till spring for sea trial and surveyor to come look. This is my first real boat I had a jet boat before and not to familiar with all the mechanics on these. Can anybody give me any of the known problems, places to look for leaks that are common. Any reviews are more than welcome, good and bad. Really just trying to be a little more educated on what I'm about to buy. It has 240 hours and I got it for 25 k out the door, sound decent? Well thank you for all who answer have a happy new year

Sounds like really low hours to me so I guess that would be the first thing I'd investigate. Buying from an individual? Has the boat been stored for a long time? That could raise its own issues.

MM took the time to link up to some good threads for you(thanks Mike). So enjoy some reading & bring back some questions.

Enjoy & welcome to CSR!

I agree with mwph. The worse thing you can do to a boat, car or a house is not use it. If it was stored properly, it'll be fine except for some dried seals (not being used it really hard on rubber).

A friend of mine had a 1998 or 99 270 and it was a great boat.

It had the 9 2 beam and an older man owned it in his mid 80's now put about 5 hours on it and it was in the water last summer. It is being sold by boat max in city island ny it's still on there web site. The name of the boat is no garanties if you want to take a look. But Iwill look into it. I wel read through the links you sent me and post again. Thank you very much for the replies

We purchased a 1999 270 SE in May of 2011 380 hours 3rd owner it was serviced in 2009 with rebuilt heads and new risers in late 2009 at 340 hours traded in to local Sea Ray dealer in late 2010. I have all the service records since it was purchased new from the same dealer I was able to speak to several of the mechanics that had worked on the boat since it was new they knew of no major problems that it had always been maintained. As of Dec 31 last time out crabbing it has about 690 hours on it. We did have a few problems from the boat not being used low hours, in my opinion when you have the survey done also have the outdrive pulled to check for any leakage or tears, check coupler, u-joints and replace the shift cable by now it probably has no lube on it and has been sitting in one position for a long time. We have over 300 hours on it in 6 months great boat will take some rough seas for its size.

Thank you bob and sue the info you just gave me is exacly what I am looking for I will have the surveyor check them. Thanks again really appreciate it.

I bought a 99' 270DA SE new in 2000... it was a great boat! It also had the 7.4/B3. I put over 900 hours on it before trading it for the 310. No real problems that were not expected.

I had some general maintenance over the years because of the hours:
Water pump (my fault due to winterizing error)
Coupler
Impeller
Alternator
Gimbal bearing
U-joints
Shift cable and boot

Again thank you all for the quick responses I went out today to take another much closer look with a mechanic. The gimbal and u joints and entire outdrive was very clean the shifter cableand throttle cables both moved freely impeller was just done risers elbows and manifolds looked great from the outside with almost no corrosion on them but yet again can't see the inside of them. On thing I did find was on the outdrive there are 2 round I, guees you call them sensors on each side one being the trim sensor and the other being ??? Well both wires on both sides are corroded to the point there is no insulation left on them.does anybody know what these sensors do and were the wires go so I can replace them? Other than that for a 13 year old boat I found very little corrosion anywere.. Anybody know were to find new dash panels they are pretty faded and last question may sounds stupid but thats why I'm asking had anybody ever striped the outdrive and powder coated it? All thoughts on that are welcome lol

The sensors: one is the trim gauge as you suspect, the other is the trim limit... it will determine where trim stops and where the trailer button takes over. They can be replaced, the wires go through the transom which I hear is difficult to fish through. You could splice and water seal the connections but some will say not.

They are Trim & Tilt sensors.
Usually last a few years and then stop working.
I just had mine replaced this year.

Well yet again thank you all. You guys are very helpfull. I will b doing the sea trial with a surveyor later this week our mayb next. Brrrrr 15 out right now try to wait for a little warmer day. I will keep everyone posted and I'm sure I wel think of some more things to rack your brains. No comments on the powder coating tho lol. I thought out might b a really good way to stop corrosion.

I would guess that the factory finish was powder coat... obviously it would be great to re-do it, although I'm not sure what would be involved in the preparation.

It would involve a complete break down of everything to bare metal rubber and all. You have to bake at about350 degrees to turn the powder into paint. Would b quite a process I'm assuming.

Great boat. Mine needed a bit of reconditioning, but that was my choice. Runs great in rough water.

I did a lot of reconditioning on my 27. Cockpit cushions, all the canvas, interior cushions, wood dash, gauges, stereo, VHF, out drive and more. Last year I did a transom assm. and exhaust manifolds. The boat runs great! As for the drive I sand it by hand and paint it with the correct paint for metal, all the marine stores have it. (I forget which one it is, I have some in the garage). My dash panels were made by Scott from Vector Imaging. I believe he is a sponsor on this site.

IMHO, the best thing about this boat (and I think the 290 of the same vintage also has it) is the aft facing port lounger where your dog and I assume son? are sitting. It is a great place for whichever one of us is not driving to lay and talk to the driver. Love it.

Sorry I havnt been on in a while to check but just got around to it. Thank you 4sure I need to do the dash panel and have been looking for somewhere to get them and you just ended my search. How did you get all the cushions off to have them redone and were did u get them redone. I'm also trying to figure out if there is an upgraded radio that I an connect to the remote up top so I don't have to change it, and is there an external amp for the speakers, and what size are the speakers. Sorry guys a lot of questions but everybody has been great in helping me I really appreciate everything. I to am a big an of the sun cushion. Just a little update surveyor is heckling the hull tomorrow and sea trial is we'd with surveyor so I hope I have a new boat wed. :smt038 One more lol is there anywhere that makes seat covers so you an just re wrap them yourself. Thanks again everyone.

Marine upholstery shop or auto trim guy. Don't know of any replacement covers.
If the radio is stock then I don't believe there is any new Clarion that will directly adapt to the remote, others I'm sure wil know more.
As for the separate amp, if you got one from the factory it will be in the forward hanging closet.

Good luck with everything. You'll love the boat.
