I'm going to look at a 1992 290 Sundancer this weekend. I was hoping this group could give me some good tips for things to look at and questions to ask.

The boat has 2 4.3L Mercruisers with closed cooling. The owner has kept it in freshwater for the 5 years he has owned it. I'm not sure if it has ever been in salt or not, but since it has closed cooling it is certainly a possibility.

As far as my experience, I have owned a Pontoon boat for the past 2 years. I did a complete teardown to the deck and rebuild for the boat after I bought it, so I am not completely helpless on the technical side. However, I recognize that a cruiser is a much different animal from a pontoon.

We plan to keep the boat in a wet slip on one of the very large lakes here in South Carolina. I'm really looking for a boat that my family (wife and 2 young daughters) can overnight on during the summer weekends. And maybe drag a kid or two on a tube. Does this sound like the kind of boat I should be looking at?

What are the advantages / disadvantages of having 2 separate motors, vs just one?

Any pre-purchase tips would be greatly appreciated.

I think the boat would serve your overnighting needs okay. It is tight with four, but we do it often and have a great time. Pulling a tube is doable if you can afford the fuel. As with all boats a thorough inspection is in order.I would definitely want A/C for sleeping at the slip. At the minimum I would compression check both motors, pull both drives to inspect u joints, gimbals, & bellows, test all systems for proper operation, & inspect the hull inside and out for any water intrusion(especially around any through hulls). There are many threads about pre-purchase inspections..do a search....good luck we love our '92 290.
