Hi:

I am kind of new here. I am looking at a 1990 220 DA. It has the 7.4 engine which was supposedly rebuilt 2 yrs ago now has about 200 hours on it according to the owner. The boat seems to be always a fresh water boat. The bottom has never been painted. My first question is, if I keep the boat in a marina on a fresh water lake (Lake Lanier in Georgia), is there any reason to paint the bottom? My second question is if I take the boat down to Florida for a vacation, how will she handle in the ocean with rougher seas? Any other thoughts about this model (good or bad) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bruce
P.S. I am also looking at some Regals of similar size and year.

My 1990 270DA is bottom painted and in fresh water all summer. I feel it is easier to clean in the fall and I get no growth on it or my outdrive all summer. Other boats get green beards on them by the end of the summer. Black also looks better than a white hull with a green/brown stain/slime all summer. My trailer boat is a Glastron Carlson CV-23 and is only on the water a weekend at a time and gets washed weekly.....no bottom paint. 22ft in the Ocean? I've seen 16 footers so I imagine it's what you are comfortable doing and it's all about conditions. I've seen inland lakes get really rough, Mike.

I agree with Mike on the bottom paint if leaving in a slip all season. If you plan to trailer the boat, then I would not paint the bottom and save the little bit of drag the paint causes. I had a 24 foot Four Winns and we used it on the Chesapeake Bay for several years, and I was out in some pretty rough conditions with her and faired quite well. You have to slow down when it gets rough, but these cuddy type cruisers are pretty dry riding if the wind isn't blowing the spray around. IMHO Sea Ray builds a quality boat.
