These are both loose and I'm wondering what kind of fastener I need. I thought about using glue, but I would prefer to do it the original way. Anybody ever dealt with this situation?

they are probably held on with the plastic "Christmas tree" type door panel posts. they usually break upon removal at that age. remove order more and reinstall, or use sheet metal screws with decorative caps at strategic spots.

If they are the panels I’m thinking of, which would be vinyl over foam, over plywood:
They can also be held on with studs threaded in to Tee nuts. The Tee nuts would be secured in to the plywood, the studs threaded in to those nuts, then slid through holes in the fiberglass.
Once the studs are through the fiberglass they would be held in place with fender washers and nuts.
At least that’s the way the panels I’m thinking of were secured on my 87 300 Sundancer.
But, he could be talking about something completely different.

If its the original plywood there is a good chance that it wont hold onto any fasteners any more. (dry rot)

No, you have got it exactly right, that is just what this is. Do you think I should glue it in place?

I had to rebuild mine as the wood had some rot in it, not a hard job and I was able to reuse the vinyl

Not it you ever want to get it off again.

If you can get it off now and the wood it still good you might be able to add a few "christmas tree" clips and drill holes for them in the wood and fiberglass. If that's not feasible then possibly try some industrial "velcro" although its going to be tough to keep that sticking in place vertically.

Only other option to not add holes in the fiberglass would be to remove the vinyl and replace the backing wood with new and use stainless tees. Then staple the material back. If you are going to take this path you may wish to consider another backer material that would not rot like wood.

If the wood is getting a little gnarly around the nuts, just try to re-seat them into the wood with some 2 part epoxy like WS 205/305.

I like what Ottawa said about reusing the vinyl and cutting a fresh piece of lumber..
