Hey guys. I was recently given this boat by my friend. It needs some work, but I am definitely willing to put it in. It's needs a new engine, but that topic is covered in this thread http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/80455-1988-SeaRay-230-engine-replacement

Anyways, this is my first boat and I am extremely enthusiastic about it. The other things it will need are seats as they were thrown out and an overall cleaning. Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can get a replacement bench seat for it? Also, I am looking into getting a top that covers the whole back of the boat like in the link below. Any thoughts?

If this were my boat, the very first thing I would do is to check the structural integrity of the transom and stringers. Tap lightly with a plastic hammer - the hammer should bounce back. If it dos not bounce back or there is a dull thud noise, the core wood is rotted. You should also use moisture meter to evaluate the same areas. If you are t comfortable doing that, a marine surveyor can do this for $100 if you tell them you just need a structural evaluation and no written report or driveline evaluation.

If you find the stringers and/or transom are rotten, you have a huge amount of work and expense on your hands that would likely exceed the value of the boat. You would then need to evaluate the cost of the repair vs. purchasing something newer that did not need extensive repairs. Take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kopF4muvF0c&list=PL02C318B574CD948D to get an idea on what's involved. Even doing the work yourself, the materials are EXPENSIVE.

Jr my 1988 230 bench was never used and was not the most comfortable place to sit. I hated the fact that all the storage space was down at my feet. Here is what I did instead. It was made to store two 6" fenders and 50' shore power cord and dock lines.
