Hi All, I recently purchased a 1988 460 EC Sea Ray and decided to join the forums. I moved up from an 86' 340. The 340 was a great boat, but after 10 years it was time to move up.

Anyway are there others who still have one of these? I don't see any threads for this one?

A few question on her though, is there anything a typical to this model I should loo for? When I had the 6v92's surveyed they still had the cross hatch in the cylinders. The rest of the boat seems real solid. Just curious what else is prone to go wrong on this model.

Welcome to CSR! I do remember seeing some chatter about the older 460 so you will probably receive some good comments. Watch for fwebster to chime in since he is the Yoda of CSR and all things diesel!

I was following one on ebay thats close to us in Rhode Island
The price seemed good but it has the same motor as yours. I was told around 1800-2100 they need to be rebuilt. I always been a gaser dont know much about diesels.

if you search Steve50 or something close to that he has the same motors in his he paid close to 25k on a rebuild.

the boat looks great with plenty of room

post some pics

Thanks for the comments guys, the broker still has it listed on Yacht World here.

The engines seem to be real solid, but they do have 1900hrs on them. The mech I had survey them said he has never seen engines with this many hours on them in this good of condition, they still have the cross hatch in the cylinders and don't really smoke on start up, only a few seconds and barley at that.

Yeah, thanks, I thought so too. I got her for xxxx and man I feel like a thief. I looked at a few of them and wow, what some people call "Very Clean" or "Great Condition", she does need a little TLC this winter though. The hand rails need to be re-fastened and the genset needs a little love as well, other then that, just normal maintenance of an older boat.

The one you reference looks pretty nice, the engines from what they show look a little tired with the gaskets hanging about. I don't like the alternate layout with the bunk beds. It makes the boat small real quick, but if you need the bunks then that's a great option.

I took delivery back in September. When in season she will be in Stony Brook, but now the boat is out of the water for the winter.

good luck to you!!!! maybe we will run into each other one day I live in Commack

he claims that one motor was rebuilt the other just had new injectors.

I emailed Frank and he gave me his thoughts on the motors.

read this link Steve made a bad situation sound funny....

... he claims that one motor was rebuilt the other just had new injectors. ...

Not likely when he is willing to take 35K, that's about the price for the rebuild and injectors alone. You need to be real careful with 6v92TTA's, depending on the injectors, they can be set for 550hp. That's way too much HP for those little 6's. The 475HP version is much better.

Thanks for the good luck, and yeah, I'm in Stony Brook and go by your neck of the woods every week day to Plainview for work ... Small world these forums ;).

I'm quoting from his email. He states that he is a diesel mechanic.

boat crusis at 25-27 knots
motors have 2000 hrs
4 years ago he replaced the turbos and exhaust manifolds
1 month ago took top end apart and had all the injectors pop tested 2 were replaced adjusted rack and timing
changed oil and all filters

motors run fine and need nothing.

I cant get over the difference in the helms. yours looks amazing !!!!!!
they did a professional job

I can tell you from my limited time with my boat, if anyone cruises this boat @ 25+ knots then they are almost wide open, and these motors will be trash at 2K hrs. That's well documented around the web, especially on BoatDiesel.

I cruise mine 20 or so knots with the RPM ~1700/1800, WOT is 2300. Not to mention the fuel consumption at that RPM/Speed, wow that's going to leave a mark. I figure I get ~20-25gph total cursing at my RPM as I was able to put ~15hrs on the boat and still have ~1/4 tank after putting in 300 gallons when I got her.

The helm on my boat was redone by the previous owner and all new wiring and switches were special ordered and made. This guy also put in Sub Zero Frig and Freezer as well. He did a really nice job, put in dual 4212 Garmin's as well and Sat TV, real nice setup.

I just came across this post. Bought a 1987 460 EC this spring. Now located in Goderich (Ontario) cruising Lake Huron, North Channel and Georgian Bay. Don't see many references the the 460 EC so I am glad to find other owners.

You should look into how the issue of the floatation foam was handled or not handled. It was added between the stringers under the floor in the cabin around the stairs. It was supposed to deaden sound and add boyancy. However, it was an open cell variety that soaked up water and rotted the stringers and flooring. The fix was to remove it, repair the structures that were compromised and some people added a different type foam when the repairs were completed.

I bought mine in July of 2010.
