I am replacing the batteries on a boat I purchased three years ago. They are currently all deep cycle - should I replace them all with deep cycle or should one of them be a starting battery? Is purchasing a dual purpose battery a better choice? If I do need a starting battery - which one is it supposed to be? I currently have a 3 battery system - two on the starboard and one on the port.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I have the same set up on my 300 Sundancer. I've heard different thoughts, but I use 3 deep cycles. Never had a problem, and I couldn't swear that it is any better for any reason.

Thanks - I never had a problem either - just the guys at West Marine making me second guess myself. I don't know if it really makes a difference, or if they are trying to sell a more expensive battery.

We have 3 batteries on our DA. The mechanic we use recommended I hook them up as two deep cycles together (parallel) and one regular by itself. Use the regular for starting and the deep cycles for the house. He's never steered me wrong yet and so far so good.

Probably a lot like many things where there is no one right answer but depends on how you use the boat and the system. Each can be tailored to your needs.
