Hey All,

I am new to the forum, and looking for some experience/reviews/thoughts on the 1988 Sea Ray 270 Amberjack. I have been looking to move up in size, and more towards a sports/fish, and came across this model. The boat has been completely renovated last year with new twin Merc 5.0 H.O engines, new Bravo 2 outdrives, and new stainless props (27 hours on new drive setup). The rear deck has been refinished with NUTEAK, all new upholstery in the cabin and at both helms. The boat has a flybridge, dual furano sonar (updated in 2013), new controls, new gauges and dash bezel. It also has new (2013) windlass, 3 battery bank, remote spotlight, hot water heater, fresh water wash down pump, and newer Taco outriggers installed in 2011. The only things left to do are refinish the original teak on the top of the gunwales, the steps to the flybridge, and the inserts on the the swim platform. I included some images below.

The owner is asking $19,900.

Any thoughts or things to be careful of would be greatly appreciated!

I have more pictures, but the forum will not allow me to upload them. Please let me know if there is a way around this.

What are you going to use it for? It looks like a nice boat for the $$ especially for the new engines. I feel that the price may be a little steep. Your resale won't be great after a couple of seasons so you are basically paying for the upgrades done in the last year.

How is the boat structurally? Is there any rot in the stringers or transom. It is a heavy boat and will require all umph that those new motors can give.
How will you be using it? Cruising? Fishing? Both?

I have a 1988 AJ 270, not sportfisher, it's a beast and handles great in rough water. Wide 10ft beam , love the boat

Have one of these at our marina and the owner has had it for at least 25yrs. Seems like its a very solid boat and never looks dated. Have a proper survey done with your own guy and have him take a good look at the transom for water intrusion. Looks like a pretty good deal to me considering the sale price is likely going to be less than the asking price.

I had a 89 and loved it. I would
still have it if it didn't get trashed in a hurricane. As others have said check the transom and stringers. Also check the fuel tanks if they are still aluminum have them checked also. Price seems to be high for a 27 year old boat. If it checks out good, I think it a much better boat than the newer ones

Good Luck with it

what goes wrong with the gas tanks?
Aluminum tanks can corrode and leak, especially at seams. Or if water gets trapped underneath. Salt water can make it worse. General comment, not specific to this model boat.

I guess TJO decided against the boat?
