The 80's Sea Rays have 4 portlights on the bow that are thin plastic non-opening windows. All 4 of mine have cracks. I have the parts to replace them. Has anyone done this? any tips or do's and don'ts? Thanks

Replacing Windows On Sea Ray

W Shiley,

I have replaced the trim rings around the windows because the previous owner had installed them using screws and they leaked badly. It worked out that the trim rings snap on and will fit tightly.

I have never replaced the glass, but need to. I was thinking about having my local service center replace them for me. If you figure it out and would like to share what you have learned, that might help me out.

Kevin..I did this task this weekend...The window are faily easy to replace, but frustrating and time consuming.. When I put the new trim rings on they did not snap into place like they should have. I was very disappointed in the fit of the ring to the window..All 4 had the same issue..Therefore a bead of caulk around the ring solved that issue. I even had the seaRay parts manager look at the rings and there was no reason why they didn't snap into place tight against the hull.

The screws that hold the window in are not initially long enough with the new caulk ...Run to the hardware store for screws 1/8 inch longer. The special nut used inside tears up you fingers when putting the windows back in..They are a very thin nut with self locking points. Person on the inside can't hear the person on the outside (this task is a two person job)..Other than that it was a piece of cake..

Port Lights

Wshiley,

I put on new trim rings on existing lights last year and it was challenging. I had to clean off all of the goop, rtv, etc the previous owners had used to hold them on. After alot of prep, they went on easily.

However I still have two window that leak a lot on the starboard side. So I will be taking them apart very soon, to see if I can reseal them, rather than replace them.

Thanks for the advise and glad to hear you got your done.

Regards,
Kevin
