Should my lower unit Alpha 1 gen 1 have these fins? If so, what do they do?

That isn't original. I'm guessing somebody added those to help get the boat to plane or the originals were broke off.

goes by a variety of nanes "whale tail" etc but used for getting a underpowered boast on plane
Tell us thats a twin engine ?

FWIW I had no problems at all getting my 250 on plane with a Merc 260. Even with a banged up 14.5x17 prop and 4 people it was no problem at all (even with 3 of them at the back of the boat). I bought a Solas 15.8x15 and it was even better but the old one was dinged up.
