The factory painted plywood anchor hatch that came with our 1980 SRV 240 rotted out several years ago and I am looking to replace it. I currently have a plastic replacement hatch in place just to fill the hole (Thanks Jim). I would like to make a nice lacquered teak wood hatch instead to match the rest of the finished teak parts on my boat. I am wondering what is the best way to go about this? Should I make the 22" x 16" hatch out of a solid piece of 3/4" teak wood? Should I make it out of 2 or 3 tongue and grooved pieces of solid 3/4" teak? Should I make it out of teak veneered 3/4" marine plywood? Unfortunately 3/4" teak marine plywood is almost the same cost as a solid teak so there is no savings there, it's actually 30% more if you include the cost of shipping because I don't have a local supply for teak laminated ply. I guess my biggest worry is making it out of solid teak and having a major warping problem in a few years. I was thinking the use of the tongue and groove board joining would help a bit with warping but I'm not sure if that will be enough. I just don't want to spend a bunch of time and money making it out of solid teak and have it totally warp and look like crap in a few years.
Any insight would be much appreciated,
Robert
