I have a 17pitch three blade stainless steel prop on my O'l Yeller and if I have more than four people on board it feels like I’m taking off in third gear. It takes forever to plane out. The mechanic working on her told me I should go to a three blade aluminum 15pitch. I just dropped $500.00 pulling my 5.7 out to repair an oil pan gasket leak!!!!! Ouch! He said he can get me one installed for another $95.00. Is this a good deal? Any thoughts?

What's your WOT, trimmed up, with just you in the boat? Is the bottom clean and the prop in good shape? Do you have trim tabs?

Going from a stainless prop to an aluminum is a step down, as the aluminum prop will have more flex, and will not perform quite as well. While $95 for an aluminum prop is certainly OK, I wouldn't call that a smokin deal you need to jump on. Did it always feel that way, or did it used to feel better and has since changed and doesn't seem to perform as well?

Need the info Lazy asked for before a recommendation can be made.

I have the same model boat. I have found three prop sizes, all aluminum, that work well.
15.25 /15 three blade- planes nice w WOT of 4600, not my favorite but if your boat willnot reach WOT range w the follwing two this is the best choice.
15/16 four blade- planes great, good mid range, WOT of 4400 good MPG @ 3. This is my favorite. All around performance even w load.
16/16 three blade- great out of water, lifts the butt of the boat nice, WOT of 4200. A good choice but can be too much prop for some engines.

The WOT formula everyone references is a great starting point, but your boat may have its own personality in the water so try a few options and see what works best.

Hope this helps.
