2 470 mercruisers with alpha 1 outdrives
i recently purchased a 1978 240 sundancer with dual 470 engines. One of the engines is shot. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement 470 mercruiser? I haven’t torn into the engine yet but it’s been sitting in a warehouse since 1999. The spark plugs were pulled from the port side engine and left out, I shined a flash light down in and can see a considerable amount of rust on the pistons so I’m assuming it’s shot.

eBay might have some rebuilt units. Look before you buy. 470s were not great engines. Oil contamination was a common problem. Coolant leaked into the sump and ruined the engine. Also known for electrical problems.

Ebay has two for sale. Look under motors, other vehicles, mercruiser 470 engines. Both advertised as running. Priced around $1,600. Check the warranty.

Ok awesome I’ll check them out, Would you know if it’s possible to not go with a 470 and go with something else instead?

I have 1 rebuilt engine from Jasper ready to drop in. Still has 2 years of the 3 year warranty.

This boat also was available, I believe, with a 260 HP 350 v-8. I had that power in my 1979 260 Express. Worked very well. If you did that, the transom would need to be replaced. On a 1978 boat, you may need to do that anyway. The 350 is a far better engine. The alternators were also very unreliable on the 470s. So if you did that, you would end up with a solid transom, an easy to service engine, and head off potential electrical problems.
