1978 240 SRV SDB- Blocks of foam in bilge? For flotation?

I just bought a 1978 240 SRV SDB boat from Arizona and noticed that it has these huge blocks of foam in the bilge right next to the engines. This is the second boat that I saw they were in there. All the other boats of the same style did not. Was this Sea Rays' attempt at adding flotation to the boat?

Have similar boxes on either sides of the engine in my '81 245. It has a high deck and I assumed it was additional flotation to help offset the weight of the engine and outdrive.

I believe its floatation in the event u take on water or capsize. It's not gonna offset any weight if the boat is upright and not full of water

Yes.. Was referring to keeping the hull level in that unfortunate event.
