Picking up my 74 Amberjack 20 c/c hull on Tuesday. Motor and outdrive gone and am planning to convert to outboard. Going to be bottom up rebuild resto conversion project. I will use it to fish the Texas coast both inshore and 5 to 10 miles offshore. Planning for 175

AJ James,

Sounds like we are on a similar track. I'm re powering my 87 270 Amberjack with two 175 Suzukis on an Armstrong bracket. Converting to Hydraulic Steering, NMEA 2K data bus for instruments. Been slow over the summer too hot and too many other projects but hope to make a little more progress this winter. gud luck and post your progress.

Thanks. I seem to have trouble typing on this site. If I type very fast it leaves out letters and when I'm finished it tells me I'm not logged in and deletes my reply. This is my second attempt at this reply. Now to the boat, 175-200 hp, custom helm with porti potty fwd. Rear corner live well and a new seat a large cooler will fit under. Raise transom to full height all across. Will post pics when se gets home God luck to you. AJ2

Yeah, the site will do some funny stuff from time to time - will log you off very quickly some days! Could be your browser !! Good luck with the project. Setting this one up for cruising - large cuddy with galley, head, dinette & sleeper down, large open deck aft --- and now big "hold" below aft deck. Original drives corroded beyond repair and engines just too much vibration and noise. Put up with it for ten years - but when drives were damaged by improper grounding at the marina - decided to make a major change to something more modern. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Please share the progress of your projects. I think these hulls will go great with OB power.

Well, finally got her home. Up at 4am. gassed and gone by 5am, arrived SE Houston 10:30am. Thats when the fun started. Ended up having to buy 2 new wheels and tires at Discount Tire, then found rusted wheels bearings. Changed all 4 and races. Strapped down hull to trailer very well, added lights and FINALLY left boat storage lot at 4 pm. 2 1/2 hours later finally out of Huston traffic and some 40 miles from boat yard. Arrived home at 11:20 pm. 15 minutes later, in bed asleep. Taking today off. LOL Will post pics when I figure how to do it. AJ.

AJ, by now I hope you have recovered by now and are well into your project. Trailers are always a pain. I've had to redesign mine to handle the change in center of gravity with OB's on the bracket.

Just a quick update on my project for anyone interested. Inboards have been removed and all other hardware removed for structural work and clean up. I worked out the bracket design with Armstrong in the early spring. Took them a while but the final product was delivered the 3rd week of June. My plan is to do a temporary fit up to the transom prior to doing the structural work so I can accurately locate the attach points and clearly identify where I need to beef up the transom to handle the new loads. have been making pix as we go - will set up a gallery when we get a little bit further along.

Did it to my 75. Two years in and I love it !!
i know this post is over a year old finally found one similar to what im planning on doing to my 74 22 srv, ,taking out the worthless found on the road dead (ford) and putting on either 2001 yama 200 or merc 225,, i have both motors , probably going with the merc,, but will post later ,, what kind of speed did u get out of yours and do you have build pics,, i would love to see them

Hi Jay,
My project is still in process - delayed by another project - but back on it now. Bracket took several months longer to fabricate than advertised. Shop got over loaded. Don't have any speed data yet but I expect improvements coming from several areas. The two DF175 are rated at the prop (not the flywheel -like the Mercruisers) So the total effective horsepower delivered to the props is considerably more than the 50hp on the face of it. I'm also painting the entire hull and topside - prepping is taking considerable time. Also repairing a soft spot in the deck under the helm station - not a big deal just time consuming.

Will post a few photos later this week. Good luck with your project.

Larry

thanks for the reply , i have made tremendous progress on mine, got the old engine out , cant seem to find anyone that wants a ford 302 anymore ,, but anyway got the transom glassed in and also fabricated/made my own bracket/pod,, fiberglass and coosa board, got it on today and exhausted,,, hit 12hrs friday 12 sat and atleast 12-13 sunday,, quite a marathon of working on it ,, if i like it , i will paint the entire hull, thinking of going to all gloss white , hull is a pale yellow,, not a fan of yellow , cant wait to hang the motor , hopefuly tomorrow if all goes well, i will let you know performance numbers as soon as i have them, going to try a 15 pitch 2001 yamaha ox66 efi, 178hrs

I've been playing with Pettit Topside EzPoxy single part. Lot'sa colors including original SR colors. Stuff really works easily. Goes on with a small diameter foam roller and shines like a new silver dollar.

Sounds like you are really making head way - looking forward to results.

war eagle btw,,,,,,im a fellow auburn grad '92, anyway i have tried all paints ,, alexseal, awlgrip/awlcraft, imron, ppg, interlux perfection,,,,but by far the best and cheapest believe or not is rusoleum from home depot and the hardner from tractors supply , every bit as shiny as awlgrip , and 5000% cheaper,, its the most unbelievable perfect paint, you can also thin it and roll and tip,,,,but i always spray,, far easier , faster ,, less steps,, just need a good compressor , and i use a 1.5 mm tip in gun,, and of course massive amounts of prep,,, i dont use any primer, most of the time unless alot of glass work ,, then i will seal it with gelcoat thinned or awlgrip 545 epoxy primer,,,,hands down , no one makes a better smoother primer and easier to sand than awlgrip ,,,,,,unfortunately they have priced themselves out of the market on paint,,, way too expensive for there paints when other like rustoleum will do just as good and in some cases better on repairability. if im doing a true all original blueprint oem restoration on a boat , then i go with gelcoat , far cheaper than awlgrip ,,and most of all that what the manf built it with,, just my 2 cents,,, i know many will disagree,, and if they do, feel free to go get awlgrip or the others they are excellent , but for me ,, to expensive when something else will do just as good, rustoleum is the biggest paint company by far of the ''marine'' paints,, and therefore have the money to hire the best chemist and chemical engineers , to produce a product for the customer that is incredbile

Great info on paints - tnx - Used Awlgrip years ago - not much since. I have heard some guys talk about how good the Rustoleum is - will have to try it. Got some repainting to do on a couple of tractors.
War Eagle - class of '70 !
