185 Sport Thread....

It honestly looks like they were strictly going for more 'asthetically pleasing" lines, meaning trying to grab the young crowd. The new ones look more like seadoos than runabouts, and have similar practicality.

Hey guys. I am a new searay owner, and it is our first boat at that. We went to a boat show, and was sold on the 07 185 sport. I do think it needs more storage, but I will get by. I cant wait till next month when we can get it out on the water. We did our test drive on 02/17/07. It was snowing when we left, and when we got to the lake we had 40 mph winds, and 3-4 foot waves. The spray was freezing on contact. With all of that, I did not care since I got to drive my new boat around. I am sure I will have a ton of questions in the coming months, so just remember I am new at this. PS, sorry for the long post.

Welcome to the board Searay Sport and congratulations on your new boat. When reading your post it reminded me of my first post on 2/11/06 the day we purchased First Born (also a 185 Sport) and I stumbled across the SRO site (yeah we actually had a birthday party for the boat this year). You have purchased a great boat and you will enjoy it. You may want to make another post in the who's who section introducing yourself to the board (so everyone can say hello sometimes these post get buried when they are on the fourth page). Do not worry about posting long post...we love reading them. Do not worry about posting questions, it is the only way to learn and you will be amazed at how much this place will make you comfortable with boating. I think my first question on the other site was launching, retreiving, docking, and beaching lessons learned; I thought people were going to laugh and it was probably the best question I ever asked, the people who answered were really trying to (and did) make me comfortable with the whole process. You will want to put your boat information, location, etc. in your signature; it helps when people are trying to answer your questions. Take time and search the board you will find alot of great information and ask questions

Again welcome to the CSR and congratulations on the 185 Sport!!!

Wesley

Hey SR Sport...welcome to the club. I also recently purchased a 07 185 Sport. We don't take delivery until April 27th. This is a great place to ask questions.

What is a safe time you can leave your radio on without draining the battery? I guess I could just get one of those battery charges that plugs into the cigarret lighter. Would that work. Or would a cap. help if it is just the radio in use?

I have a portable jump start kit so I don't worry about it. I have left mine on for 2-3 hours without draining the battery. Although I have never had to use it, but it sure will come in handy if my battery ever went out. You could also add an extra battery and install a switch to isolate to one battery when you plat the stereo.

I will probably look into both ideas. BTW, I was looking at the pictures in the gallery, and my boat would br used as a dingy on most of the boats I saw on there. I guess you have to start somewhere though.

This diagram is simpler. Just ignore the circuit breaker (+) and distribution panel (-) if you do not plan on installing an amp. If you are planning on installing an hook the amp up where the circuit breaker (+) and distribution panel (-) are indicated with a fuse between the switch and the amp. Note: that this setup will utilize and charge whichever battery the switch is positioned to and nothing else.

My first post here, but DITTO! I picked up my IDENTICAL 2007 185 Sport this morning in 45 degree weather and 20+ mph winds.

I know the smarter answer to this is "buy an inboard ski boat," but how do I get the best wake out of this boat (I want to jump the wake with my Yamaha Superjet)? Anyone tried "fat sacs"?

Thanks,

Aaron

Did you get the V6? It plows a pretty good hole at about 2000 rpm as it starts to come on plane. Burns a fair amount of fuel going that slow however.

GPS and Fish Finder

OK I need help FAST - I bought a Garmin GPS and a Fish Finder for our boat and wanted to surprise my better half - so he dropped the boat off for it to be "summerized" and I dropped the two items off and asked that the Marina install them in logical spaces around the dash - I got a call today that the only place our model boat (the 185 of course) can fit anything is by our KNEES - why would I want to have to look down there for the GPS or Fish Finder? Any photos anyone have of where you put your "gadgets" the GPS is about the 4 x 5 inches and the Fish Finder is a bit smaller I think.
Any help is appreciated.

I just realized that I have hit my download quota (little help Jim  ). Ellen you may want to go back to the first page of this posting and look at Midway's set up. The problem is I am not sure you have that much room on the newer 185s. I have a picture of the helm also on the first page and there really is not alot of room.

Hopefully others will be able to help out by looking at those photo's.

I put my gps between the dash, and windshield. I would just mount it there. There is no room in the dash. You might have to have a custome enclosure fabbed up, and put it on top of the dash. Sorry, but there is little to no room to add stuff.

Ellen, you might want to check out RAM Mounts. You didn't mention the models you purchased but they have mounts for most of them. At this point maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to have your better half involved in helping to decide where the best location and mounting options might be. I know that won't quite be the surprise you had hoped for, but I have a feeling he will still be extremely excited.

thanks guys - I have already talked to him and it seems he'd checked and we might be able to have the GPS mounted where the remote at the helm is on the models with the stereo up-grade - we didn't get that :smt009 we are thinking of asking if the fish finder could be mounted on the passenger side (I generally am at the helm when we are in fishing mode) - I have NO idea if this is even possible but we'll ask tomorrow - I'm looking at photos all over the place and think the change in the dash that was made from 05 to 06 was a stupid move on Sea Ray's part but what do I know - only that the boat should be ready to go in the water by the weekend and I can't wait to see her again!

Thanks for the input if anyone has any more ideas we'd love to hear them.
and yes, he was excited even though it wasn't the surprise I tried to pull off.

I don't know the layout of your dash but check my photos in the virtual marina for the mounting of my electronics. I installed myself so I may have done some things the marina will not do such as fabricating the wood mounts for everything. Just something for ideas.

Midway - I printed out your photos for the fisherman in the family and while he was annoyed to see our dash has less room - he loved your modifications - but SurfSide wouldn't do that exactly so last I knew we had the GPS to the left of the steering wheel hopefully not in the way and the fish finder over on the passenger side - I'm hoping as long as he's happy I'll be happy ... we shall see - just read the specs on the GPS and I think it has some fish finder thing in it anyway so we might be a bit over compensating. I'll try and post photos when it's all done - can't wait to get the boat out - they told us today they are unwrapping like 300 boats a day??? I was amazed.
