185 sport prop selection

Was that a turning point hustler? how did you like against the black max?

Was was your top speed and rpm with the original prop and the 23 tp?

Looking for an alternative to the 21P vengeance that can help top end 1-2mph and holeshot. (must be 3 blades)

Yes, the Hustler is Turning Point, I originally purchased the TP 14 1/4 X 23, I installed and ran it, cruise speed increased about 5 mph, wot went from 5000/49 mph to 4400 and about 40 mph. I called TP they swapped for a 14 1/4 X 21 which gave back the wot and put cruise speed back close to where it was with the original 14 X 23 stock prop. The 23 TP just has too much bite for my engine and drive combo. I see by your info you have a Stingray with 3.0L, I would say call TP and talk to them, give engine L and HP, drive and ratio, what you are currently running and they will help you out, my dealings with them was great. Good luck and hope this helps some.

Hey, actually I have a 185 sport, that's an old signature. I just updated it. So you went from a 23" stock prop to the 21" hustler and noticed no performance improvements? both ran 49@5000rpm? Yes The hustler is known to have more aggressive cupping then other alum props.

Thanks

I see you have the mpi, 220 hp, you may still want to call TP and talk to them about your setup and the 23p prop, mine is the carb 190 hp version, won't cost anything but a phone call. You may have enough to turn the 23p prop.

I am not interested in the correct pitch, I am interested in Prop comparisons. My mpi Has a different gear ratio then yours so 23" is totally over propped. I would need 19". (1.62 vs 1.81)

You stated you went from 23" stock prop 49 mph @ 5000rpm to 21" pitch TP hustler 49 mph @ 5000rpm if I read correctly...
What was the point of that? damaged prop or I am not understanding this correctly.

Thanks.

I had not thought about the gear ratio difference, you are right the 23" would be way too much. I originally purchased the 23" Turning Point in hopes of getting a little more speed since I over rev a little at 5000 with the normal full load, I have turned 50 at 5200 with just me in the boat. I did do minor damage to the stock 23" prop before I got to change out, so I put the 23" TP on and ran it, great increase at cruise but killed wot rpm and speed. I call TP and told them what I had and they swapped the 21" which gave me back what I had with the stock prop. I am going to find a good prop shop and have the stock one repaired and tweek the cup on it a little to see what happens, if it does not work, well I will still have a spare prop.
