I like everything about my boat except the captains/passenger bucket seats. There is no back support with the riser up or down. I have owned a lot of boats over the past 20 yrs but these are the most uncomfortable. What have any of you done to help get some support to your lower back besides a throw cushion?

Thank you for your help.

I use a throw cushion but I'm glad you asked this because I'd gladly try another option if someone has thought of one.

I use a throw cushion too but I constantly have to adjust it. I would like to bend the seat backs forward but I am afraid they may break.

I have found that, for some reason, the seats in some boats are positioned such that they don't allow you to slide forward enough. For those boats that do have a seat that slides forward enough, it makes it more comfortable. Now, I have yet to try this, but my first though was to remove the slider, attach a piece of 3/4 ply to the seat bottom using the existing mounting holes in the seat and then reattach the slider to the plywood in a position to allow the seat to ultimately slide closer to the dash. However, you'd need to be wary of going "too far" to avoid any undue amount of stress on the slider base or seat base.

You could try angling the seat - like in a car that has power seats where you "dip" or "tilt" the front edge of the seat down - by spacing the rear mounting points higher than the front. But, of course, it'll be a little trial-n-error to avoid going so far that you feel like you'd slide off.

The seat base could be mounted closer to the dash, but that might be more than most are willing to do.

I like your idea of tipping the seat front down. I just need some lumbar support. Currently while driving there is no back support in any seat position.

Thanks
Bob

I suppose you could make a lower-back cushion/support and velcro it in place around the seat. Wouldn't be the best looking thing, but would be functional. Another thought would be to have a local upholsterer look at the seat and see about adding more foam inside. The tricky part might be how much more cushion can be added before the vinyl gets too stretched out and can't be stapled back in position. But, if it's the seat I'm thinking of, the middle part of the seatback is separate from the rest, which could allow for the upholsterer adding more vinyl (where it won't show) to be able to staple it again.

Those times when I actually sit in the seat are rare, usually when it is raining, but when I do I use two cushions, one under me and a thicker one behind me for back support. The only adjustments allowed with my seat are to swivel, which it does most unwillingly, and for the bolster to be flipped up or down. I'm not sure what size person that seat was designed to fit but at 6 feet, 180 lbs it wasn't me.

When the bolster is up I put the thicker of my two throw cushions on top of it so my rear doesn't fall asleep as it is not the most comfortable thing to sit on.

FYI, your seat should also have sliding capabilities - unless it's been changed by a previous owner. There's also an knob on the side that adjusts the tension to make swiveling easier or harder (this is in addition to the locking lever). Also, take a look at the plastic "cup" on the inside of the socket/top of pole for condition.

My driver's swivel seat will not swivel....not sure if the locking mechanism is stuck...the lever moves, but the seat will not budge. The passengers seat lifts straight up and off the seat post...any ideas...
thanks.

Read my post, directly before yours. Check those things out, then post back. While you're checking it out, is it salted up?

This is probably the only thing I do not like about my 190. I put a throw cushion behind me and it is fine, but I find it strange that they designed it so far back even when fully forward. You get to versions like the SLX and they do not have this issue. I sat in a similar model crownline this winter at a trade show and the comfort of the seat almost convinced me to trade mine in(obviously not worth the price difference) but might have been a deciding a factor if I had know when I bought boat

As Lazy Daze says, there are THREE separate adjustments/levers on the seats. One lever to adjust the forward/back position, one to lock the swivel, and one to adjust the tension of the swivel. The tension know is on the part of the seat base that wraps around the post.

Needs to be unscrewed a touch and then the levers will release and allow them to swivel and move. Each lever has or is a screw as well as just a lever. Get under there and have a good look.
