just thought I would share an idea I had concerning storing the 1 lb. propane tanks for my Magma grill.....I bought everything at Lowes....lost cost but effective....the expansion plug and rubber cap creates an air tight compartment....if one of the tanks leaks propane it would be contained in the 4" PVC pipe....3 tanks will fit into the 2' long storage tube....this works well to keep on the boat as well since the gas is contained if there was a leak....

Really cool idea though I wonder if this would be more or less dangerous in the event of a nearby fire? I'm assuming the PVC would melt before the tanks would burst or start leaking. But if those little buggers wanted to blow inside that 4" tube you'd have one heck of a launcher on your hands :)

Lol.... If there is a dock fire that close I have bigger things to worry about!........

I'm surprised the marina would allow that.

They may ask me to take it down....I have thought of that possibility......however 90% of the boats on my dock have gas grills and store the propane tanks either on their boat or in their dock box....hard for me to see the difference from my storage method.....

Why?

Two reasons:
1. To organize the tanks into one spot instead of having them lying loose in the dock box or on the boat. This also makes it easy to keep track of how many full tanks I have.
2. In case a tank were to leak the gas would be contained instead of possibly pooling in a low spot such as an ER bilge and creating an explosion hazard

I do understand keeping them in one place, but the chance of a leak is SO unlikely (unless you refill them) it seems to be a lot of work for little gain. It's your time.
Me, I keep a 10 pounder in the dock box. But then again, I grill mostly on the dock.

Grilling at the dock with propane is a big no no around here.
Gas grills are for on the hook or up away from the dock.
Electric grills are okay on the dock.

We are allowed as long as the grill is on the boat. No grills on the dock!

Geez they gave us big boy pants up here in Michigan ...we can barbecue on the dock in our covered slip

Most states follow NFPA 303 requirements around marinas and boatyards.
"A prohibition against the use of any form of hibachis, charcoal, wood, or gas type portable cooking equipment, except in specifically authorized areas that are not on the docks, on boats in the berthing area, or near flammables"

For those using open flame BBQ's in the marina area you better have some good insurance.

You are far more organized than I. I just shove 'em in a cabinet.

I don’t think if one leaks it will be contained in that. The pressure will build till your holder leaks. I think the key with those is to not store them in enclosed spaces.

I store mine in the compartments beneath the seats in the cockpit. Those are vented so if there is a leak it will run out the transom door.

Cliff, I think if your marina people walk the docks and see where you have "PROPANE" on the side of that tube they'd probably have a big problem with it. Remove the lettering and they'd probably just shrug their shoulders and wonder what it is.

thanks....I had that in mind when I used a rubber cap for the pipe....I was thinking that in the event of a leak the rubber cap would expand enough to keep the gas contained....

but maybe not....

lol.....I did the same thing....but not long ago I ran out of gas in the middle of cooking some nice steaks for me and the Admiral.....I 'thought' I had another tank somewhere in the bottom of my dock box....well I was wrong and the Admiral was not happy....so with this storage pipe I can keep track of the number of tanks I have and get to them easily....

thanks.....it took about 5 mins to assemble the storage pipe so no big commitment of time for this project.....

I have to respectfully disagree about the chance of the 1 lb. tanks leaking.....over the past several years I have had at least two new tanks leak all of the gas out while in storage...
