Hi I'm moving up from a 05 340 DA , WHAT A GREAT BOAT . Fenomimal
In every aspect of operation, never used the tabs to get on plane.wanting to move to a 390/400 DA
I'm now looking/ interested in a 04 and up 390/40 DA , GAS !!
Question, 8.1L 370 hp. VS. 8.1 L HO 420 hp

How does the boat run/handle Mostly planing ? Speed top end doesn't matter

I know diesels have more torque, but the maintenance and fuel saving does not apply to me, any thoughts/experiences real life , would be helpful
My gut say go with the 420 hp only ,( the more hp the better ) but there Seems to be more of 370 hp boats out there then the 420 hp b
 
Look at the torque curve NOT the total HP.......I suspect the curves are very similar......my guess is the HO's will give you a little more top end speed....
 
We have absolutely no issues with the gassers. Does it drink the fuel, sure but not anything we can’t handle. Runs great even with jetski on platform.

That is correct, the power curve is only for top end which to me is kinda pointless on this size boat.

When we purchased ours, there was only one 390 diesel available and it was stripped of other options and a salt boat. I was hesitant to pick up gasser but I wasn’t willing to pay $30-$40k more for one year newer 40da with diesels.

Gonna follow this form.... If you don't mind me asking whats ur cruise speed with the gas? How far can you go on 1 tank and how much do you hold?? sry for all the questions.... We love to travel and debating on diesel and gas now... Prob gonna make a move mid season...
 
I bought a 2006 40DA new. We originally ordered it with the QSB 380 Diesels (with a $55,000 additional price tag). After thinking about the way we used the boat (lots of local travel plus one or two trips a season of about 100 nm each way) I changed the order to the 8.1 HO gassers. If I recall, cruise was around 21 knots burning 40 gph. I never had an issue with close quarters handling, though I did have a bow thruster and used it when necessary. Unless you're doing longer range cruising or find a good deal on a diesel boat, there's nothing wrong with gassers in this model. I'm sure the purists aboard here will vehemently differ on this point but that's my observation and I've actually owned one, not just read about it. You can take that for what you will.
