I just noticed that I am missing a small plastic piece that is located right behind the trim arm on the leading edge of the outdrive. 1. What is this piece and what is it for? 2. Will it hurt to run the motor with it off.

You may have your trim up to high for a tight turn. Try lowering your trim right before you start a tight fast turn.

I had the same problem on my bass boat trailer. Lost two bearing buddies before I found the problem. The nut that holds the hub to the axle was to loose and they vibrated off.
