'69 185-srv slips out of gear at high rpms

I think this 69 boat had a couple of decades before the Alpha drive would be invented! Because the description says "was slipping out of gear" I'm thinking it was able to be put back into gear and then had the same problem again. A clear description of this would have been nice. So, I don't...

    Horizons vs. raw water cooled

tginz, I believe you already had a raw water pump on the engine with a B3 drive, correct? How about the raw water, where does it come from, the outdrive or do you have a separate thru-hull. I'm not sure what DG is thinking, but I imagine some people don't worry about the water until they get...

    320Da 350 mags vs 6.2 both V-Drives

My understanding is that the 6.2 is a totally different engine, not a modified 5.7. There are some internal differences - but other things have come closer. For example the 350 mag is also fuel injected, not carb'd. Normally I'm a much bigger fan of the 5.7, although I don't really like the...

Just buying an '86 268 'Dancer...

I had the same experience when I bought my 1980 in 2001. It had a new engine. The boat doesn't have an hour meter. I didn't notice it at first because it must have been a long block where you have to add on things like the alternator, which was actually much older than the engine. Turned out to...

    260 Weekender won't hold course

Hang in there, you can make things better. Your boat is 23 years old and may have skipped some maintenance and upgrades. You can also change some stuff. First, the 26 Weekender is a great boat. It is well laid out with more cockpit room than most others, plus nice interior - without a lot of...

    Need help deciding an Inverter

Let me see if I can summarize our joint inverter project boat. We start with a relatively small but sleek, fast and versatile sport cruiser. Maybe it has a small (noisy) generator. Part of the reason it's noisy is because the manufacturer hasn't enclosed it for sound control for both cost and...

    Understanding Tides and Current

You're onto another interesting and valuable concept in boating - tides on a river. Those who argue otherwise are really missing something. A simple 1 or 2 knot flow can mean a 2 to 4 knot improvement in speed and resulting time compared to running against the current. Some rivers run faster...

    '80 5.0L Starter Problem

Is that the original 1980 engine? Of course they didn't call it a 5.7 LITER in 1980. My old Mercruiser book lists the model 228 as the 305 GM engine. The electrical diagram doesn't show a black wire to the starter for that engine. The Ford engines (302 ci) did have a black wire, which went to...

    Prop Size

You don't say why you need to replace your props. If I assume they are damaged beyond repair, that also means we can't tell much from them about your current performance. I would stick with 3-blade props because you have twins and v6 engines. Stainless is better if you can afford it. That will...

Blower Vents for 1982 260 Weekender

BTW, those aren't blower vents. They are air intake vents. I believe your blowers exit at the rear - probably in the center. If your blowers are exhausting out these vents, something is not hooked up correctly.

    Fuel Usage - 310 Dancer

I thought you meant kilometers per hour, which should have been larger. But I guess you meant knots, which should be just plain knots as knots per hour is redundant double-speak, which is also redundant.

Just buying an '86 268 'Dancer...

Looks nice. The engine room looks unusually clean. Just a couple of suggestions from the pictures. I'm curious about that tan wire going to the positive post on the battery. Unusual. I'd like to see more protection on those battery posts - it may be required. You can buy a battery box and put...

Just buying an '86 268 'Dancer...

I'm not sure about the responses here. Was this a survey that didn't involve putting the boat in the water or running the engine? I thought the guy was going to look at it on land then do the in-water check. If it was never checked in the water, there is a lot more that wasn't checked. I...

Just buying an '86 268 'Dancer...

Going back 21 years? You'll love the change. Those are good boats and, although some like even more power, you should do fine with a 350 in a 26 ft boat. The main things to look at are rotting interior wood - bilge stringers, transom and the foredeck, especially near the anchor. Just make...

    Sea Ray build quality

Searay quality has been all over the place over the years. I like my 1980 and you like your 1976. Hard to compare to today's boats. I had to rip out and rebuild my cockpit floor because of rotting. It was primarily plywood construction with fiberglass. But it was almost state of the art at the...

    Anchor rode pre treatment?

Yeah, I was wondering about that 1/2" too. Seems to small. One concern is whether it can do the job. The other is whether it is the correct size for the windlass. If so, I'd wonder if the boat has a proper windlass. As to a clean line, does this line have a length of chain on it? I would like...

Sea Ray to unveil new Pachanga!

Not sure what this thread has to do with "Classic Searays", except that the model name was used long ago. But under that logic you could include anything here.

    Fuel Usage - 310 Dancer

Barry, Your fuel consumption wasn't much different on those two trips. You ran almost 50% longer on one trip and burned 50% more fuel. Yeah, your mpg differed, but not your rate of fuel burn. I do agree with your major statement though, and never disputed that. I just said that each engine...

1986 268 weekender engine speed and planning?

Sorrento 25, If you want a used Mirage Plus prop, I have a 17 in. It was a little too much pitch for a 5.7L. I needed a 15 in like Lime4x4 found. You won't be able to use that with your 7.4L. And, it depends on the gear ratio in your outdrive. If you have a 1.50 or thereabouts ratio, it may be...
